Re: Old Albertsons store brands
One of the reasons why (I think) Albertsons bought Safeway was to gain access to their store brands, since SuperValu had killed most of the brands and kept others (like Wild Harvest). You may be right. I live about two hours from the closest Safeway, and I took a stroll through the Culpeper, VA sto...

Re: Former Smith's locations in Arizona that never became Fr
I'd add to Tony's list a few other former AZ Smith's. Converted to Price Rite Grocery Warehouse #561-Phoenix-26 E Baseline-(My memory says this wasn't ever a Smith's. They picked it up from Megafoods?) #562-Phoenix-1940 W. Indian School-Food City Smith's #303-Cottonwood-1100 Hwy 279-Frys #305-Sierr...

Re: Phoenix - Remembering Smitty's
Does anyone have a listing of the Smitty's stores at the time of their sale to Smith's?
I know that Smith's bought 28 stores but only 17 of them became Fred Meyer (and later Fry's) Marketplaces.

Re: Former Albertsons stores in the NW area of Phoenix
Just want to update. The former Albertsons Express fuel center at the former Albertsons at 7575 W Cactus Rd in Peoria that then became a Shell and then closed has found a new lease on life. This store was closed and became Lee Lee Oriental Market before Albertsons LLC sold the fuel centers to Valero...

Safeway, former ABCO, at 7th St. and Thunderbird in Phoenix
This store has to be one of the most unique Safeway locations in the state of Arizona. Unlike the other former ABCO Desert Market locations that Safeway purchased in 2001, this store looks like it was a late 1970s / early 1980s build (as opposed to the other ABCO Desert Markets which were all 1990s ...

Re: Bashas'
The Bashas' site on Glendale @ 16th in Phoenix...had to have been a Lucky! Sign on the street, and the interior of the store are the clues! Yes, a facelift with painting...but the flooring and frig/freezer cases are from the Lucky era! If you're in Arizona and want some Lucky era remnants, try the ...

Re: Former Smith's locations in Arizona that never became Fr
I've got the entire listing of Arizona Smith's Store locations (and what they became) below: Smith's AZ Locations (Feb 21, 1999): Avondale Store # 312 1575 Dysart Rd, Avondale, AZ 85323 (now Fry's) Chandler Store # 330 2075 N. Alma School Rd., Chandler, AZ 85224 (now Fry's) Flagstaff Store # 192 201...

Former Smith's locations in Arizona that never became Fry's
I'm curious if there is a listing of former Smith's Food and Drug stores in Arizona that were never converted to the Fry's banner. The only one I can think of is that store at 19th Ave. and Bell Rd. which sat vacant for several years before being converted to a Kohl's. I'm sure that there were other...

Re:
This has me wondering... anyone know if the Frys located at 3616 East Ray Road, Phoenix, AZ is a former Smiths? (This is in the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix.) This store has the "open-door" construction in place, which I find quite notable given the temperatures this store endures. That arch...

Re: Phoenix - Remembering Smitty's
In fact: after Smittys becoming part of Smiths; even if there was one of each across the street from one another, if both stores were profitable-------------Smiths kept 'em both open. How many locations are still like this? I know that the former Smith's (now Fry's Signature) at 90th St. and Shea i...

Re: Bashas'
Unfortunately, Bashas' wasn't able to get favorable terms on a lease renewal at that site and now it's a Sprouts (along with a number of other former ABCO stores in the Phoenix area).

Re: Aborted Fred Meyer in Phoenix
I think the full size store at Bethany Home was actually in the process of being finished and stocked when Kroger decided not to open it. A Wal Mart Supercenter sits on this site now. That is not a very good neighborhood. It was probably not the right spot for Fred Meyer to make its debut in Phoeni...
