Re: Dairy Queen Through the Years
A few random thoughts... Dairy Queens here in the Northeast seem to be in a slow decline. There hasn't been one within 50 miles of Rochester NY (where I live) in a number of years. I have to go to Buffalo to get a fix! The number in New Jersey also seems to be dropping gradually. On the plus side, a...

Re: Vintage Supermarket Music
During my short period of employment at a long-gone discount department store which shall remain nameless, the music rarely came into focus. I just kind of "tuned it out"-- although it was noticed when it was turned off after the store closed for the night. But when it did come into focus....

Re: Richway and/or Value City
Not sure whether this fits but we do seem to be jumping all over the map... here in Western New York it's just standalone Value City Furniture stores. I don't recall hearing about Value City Department Stores in New Jersey before I moved here in 1989 so I was surprised to come across one in NJ on a ...

Re: A&P Grand Opening in Yarmouth, Massachusetts in 1960's
I was very surprised to see that Google Books is now putting newspapers up online. For example, someone had mentioned a Robert Hall in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and I was able to find an ad for it in a long gone paper called the Fords Beacon.
It's a long shot, but you might give it a try. Good luck!

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor
Bradlees picked up the Two Guys in Woodbridge, New Jersey, at the intersection of US 9 and "old 440" (now NJ 184). Wal-Mart knocked down the building and built new at a right angle to the old building (facing "old 440" instead of US 9). Caldor took over the EJ Korvettes also in W...

Re: History in Color: Grand Grocery, Lincoln, NE 1942
I saw the same photo collection (initially for a different reason: there are railroad photos).
Any thoughts about what the words directly below "Grand Grocery" are at the left? It's "Farmers" (something) "Store" but the post blocks the middle of the phrase.

Zanottos San Jose (Foxworthy Shopping Plaza)
On our recently completed trip to San Jose, I happened upon a supermarket called Zanottos, which is located in the Foxworthy Shopping Plaza at the intersection of Foxworthy and Cherry, in what I guess would still be the Willow Glen section of town. I had asked my in-laws if they knew anything about ...

Very nice, thanks for sharing. Looks like a former A&P employee posted many, if not all, of these images.

Re: H. Salt, Esq.
There was one in San Jose, on Meridian Avenue just south of I-280, for a number of years. I believe it is now closed.
H. Salt's most famous appearance was arguably in "This Is Spinal Tap."

Re: That used to be a department store?!
I don't think I can come up with anything more exotic around here than the conversion of a former Caldor (nee Hills, previously Gold Circle IIRC) into office space. I would imagine that's relatively common.

Re: Two Guys Discount Stores
If it's the Hudson Mall, it would be Jersey City, NJ and I can certainly confirm that one for you... It was quite the large store. I don't have too many specific memories of it as we moved out of JC when I was a First Grader. I did get back there once in a while but the usual Two Guys after that for...

Re: Trader Joe's Westfield NJ: What was it before?
You know, it had been so long since I had been to the center of Westfield, I wasn't even thinking "new building," but you're right. So maybe I need to change my question to "What was on that site ? And it might not have been anything that's on topic here. Ah, well... Data point edit: ...

Re: Odd layouts
The Price-Rite near here in Rochester (NY) has a layout larger than but similar in intent to the Save-A-Lot-- entry is through the produce section and thence to the back of the store before being able to double back through any other aisle to the checkouts. The few Aldi Stores that I have been to al...

Re: Trader Joe's Westfield NJ: What was it before?
Yes, that does help, thanks! The Foodtown reference sounds familiar.
Next time I'm in there, which probably won't be for a while, I think I'll earn myself a few funny looks by asking the employees...

Trader Joe's Westfield NJ: What was it before?
Recently made a stop at the Trader Joe's on Elm Street in Westfield, NJ. This building is oriented at a right angle to the street with parking in front and adjacent to the left side of the building (looking at the front). I moved out of the area over twenty years ago and this was my first trip back ...
