Garden Food Stores and Southern Food Stores

I was looking at some microfilm the other day of the Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch from 1957. Besides ads for Colonial, Safeway, Giant ("Now with 36 Stores!") and a couple of independents, there were ads from "Garden Food Stores" and "Southern Food Stores" - both with telephone numbers to call for store locations.
Does anyone know if these are local coops or marketing alliances or national/regional, or what? Southern Food Stores refers to customers of a local wholesaler which merged with Richmond Food Stores in 1974 to become Richfood (now part of Supervalu), but Garden Food Stores is a new one to me. City directories and telephone books haven't been much help so far.
