Re: mystery store, Greenwood, IN

Okay, thanks. Neat looking building. I haven't been to Indy more than a few times, and I've never been in a Marsh, though I hear some the Marketplace stores have a really weird layout and the O'Malia store on S. Meridian is supposedly an 80s-90s time capsule, according to a friend down there. I did ...

mystery store, Greenwood, IN

Drove past this the other day, there's a marina/Penn Fruit kinda looking place next to this K Mart building. Looks closed and the parking lot is sealed off from traffic now. https://www.google.com/maps/@39.604273,-86.1078379,3a,75y,227.75h,85t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSeF2kDEHqYoDdM1RpcsEtw!2e0!7i3328!8i...

more old school Krogers closed, SE MI

http://www.candgnews.com/news/end-era-riverland-kroger Not sure if I posted that when it happened. Original greenhouse (last unaltered exterior greenhouse still operating as a Kroger in metro Detroit that I know of) with a grid interior. The suggested Kroger to visit instead is nowhere near this one...

Kroger demolished, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI

It had the black on white signage and the Bauhaus interior, for the most part. It had some modern sig...

Kroger greenhouse closed Jan 2012

http://www.candgnews.com/news/end-era-riverland-kroger Sterling Heights, Michigan. Last unmolested greenhouse that I know of in SE MI still operating as a Kroger. (Others still operate, heavily remodeled.) Had the grid interior, probably a mid-sized floorplan, no pharmacy, layout was quite similar t...

Re: Odd A&P architecture

I might have asked this before, but I can't recall. Our A&P here in Oscoda, MI moved in the mid-1970s to their fourth and final location, which looks like this . It looked exactly the same its entire life — when A&P started closing stores in 1992, it became Big Valu for a few months, then C...

Re: Early Walgreens stores in Michigan

A little more searching shows that Walgreens also had mall based stores in Flint in at least Eastland (now Courtland) and Dort Mall. By the late 70s, these were both Perry. Genesee Valley also had a Perry for a while, so I wonder if it was a Walgreens too. I remember Lakeside in Sterling Heights an...

Re: Sears Hardware, dead chain?

Sears Hardware has been gone since probably 05 or 96 in SE MI. I miss it dearly; the prices weren't great but it was one of the closest retail establishments to my house and I really, really dislike ACO (SE MI hardware chain).

Re: 5915 Yonge, North York ON

I just drove up Yonge the other night. The store appears to have a conventional roofline now. :( This store also looks a lot like a Ralphs (I think on Ventura Blvd.) I've seen in a book on Googie architecture, probably written by Alan Hess. The Food Basics logo is slightly different now, too, but yo...

Re: Southampton Waldbaums/A & P.

Yes, South for sure and possibly East. I'd have to find them, though. I was in Southampton 12/09 right before winter came. I went in that store. Amazing what they can do with that small of a space. The outside bottle return machines were both broken. I'm pretty sure East was a centennial. The Southa...

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)

Back to Michigan... The Belleville store and the Ypsilanti store definitely coexisted. The Belleville store was more than likely built at KM's peak. It did not have a KM Foods that I know of, but it had a supermarket-sized space at the other end of the plaza (last time I went by it was a Dunham's Sp...

Re: McDonald's Express

[quote="TenPoundHammerAlso, a large number of Meijer stores had McDonald's in them. I remember that all three "original" Meijers in Flint had McDonald's in them — Pierson Rd. and Center Rd. both had it in a balcony, but Hill Rd. just had it at the back of the store. Unlike the reduced...

Re: 10 Most Unique McDonald's

In the early 90s, I remember a unique McDonald's which was either in Toledo, Ohio or Detroit, Michigan. It actually looked more like a bank on the outside. I don't remember exactly where this was, but remember it was adjacent to a mall we stopped at on the way to the airport, and I was with my uncl...

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)

1. Ypsilanti, MI, Grove at Emerick...visible from I94, I think this closed before 1994. Shopping center interesting also because the Farmer Jack had one of those tall yellow signs. Store has never reopened as anything else. 2. I remember seeing one in Adrian, MI, probably 1991 or so. Don't know if i...
