Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
Giant first started to inch into the greater area in the early 80s; the first store in west Allentown was in 1982, and the store in Thorndale was in 1984. Between 1985 and 1987 they opened stores in Easton, south Allentown, Brookhaven, Levittown, Warminster, and Yardley. Pottstown was around 88-89, ...

Re: Delaware County history resource
Later articles closer to when the mini-mall opened said that the Acme opened in November 1975, and the Thrift Drug was a few months later. I haven't seen any reference to a Springfield Acme, if there was it was gone before the early 60s. There was the Swarthmore store that opened in 1961 however; th...

Re: Delaware County history resource
Here's a link to one of the articles describing the Granite Run Mini Mall, hope this works: http://delawarecolib.newspaperarchive.com/PdfViewer.aspx?img=91074484&firstvisit=true&src=search¤tResult=4¤tPage=0 From what I can gather, when people referred to Acme being in &qu...

Delaware County history resource
While searching for more recent Delco Times archives, I came across this link from the Delaware County library: http://delawarecolib.newspaperarchive.com/ It has free PDFs of various newspapers covering Delaware County from the late 1800s up until 1977! I've checked, and it doesn't appear any of the...

Re: When did the Lansdowne PA Acme close?
The Lansdowne store did close in 2005, with the Aston store later that year. The Giant opened in 2004, so it only overlapped briefly with Acme. The Acme in Yeadon was long gone by that point, and 58th & Baltimore was a Great Valu back then. Super Fresh closed in 2002, so it was gone possibly bef...

Re: Central PA questions
catnapped: I've since found out from a visitor to my Flickr page that the Big Lots/ Eckerd was an IGA; it was added later in the Zayre/ Ames days and closed after a few years (late 80s to early 90s). It would have already been gone by the time Giant started building. Lenny: I'm actually from the Leh...

Re: Central PA questions
My one friend went to Shippensburg from 1997 to 2001, and for a time worked at the Kmart there, so I got to see some of that area in 1999 and 2000. At that point the Weis still had the brown and tan design inside; apparently it later remodeled but then closed anyway. There was also the CVS next door...

Central PA questions
Hey everyone, one of my most recent projects (I have many at once, haha) is compiling information on former stores in central PA for some upcoming trips I'd like to take out there in the spring and summer. I've been able to find information and locations for quite a few stores over the last few mont...

Re: Genuardi's in Philadelphia County and NJ/DE/MD
From what I've gathered the belief was always that within the Philly city limits people were more pro-union, and as such both Clemens and Genuardi's unofficially would never go into the city. The fear would be that if they opened a store in the city, the employees would be more likely to unionize; o...

Re: A&P in South Philadelphia
No, they were actually both Penn Fruits; there was a PDF of a book I found online that listed many of the shopping centers in Philly area as of about 1960; I unfortunately can't find it now, but it did mention that the neighborhood of Oregon Ave between 20th & 24th had Sears, Snellenburg's, and ...

Re: A&P in South Philadelphia
I've also just found out that the Oregon Ave Kmart will be closing early next year; that leaves the Target and Walmart as the main two discount stores in south Philly (although there's still the Kmart in the Gallery). I don't know if that Walmart can handle any more customers than it has, although t...

Re: A&P in South Philadelphia
The Grays Ferry Pathmark didn't open until 1988 according to articles; it sounds like that area of town just didn't have a supermarket at all for a while. Info on Whitman Plaza (on Oregon Ave) says that it was built in 1980, meaning it would have been a slightly later Kmart (it does look a little di...

Re: A&P in South Philadelphia
Nope, both Snyder Plazas (North and South) were built in the 80s. Snyder Plaza South with Rite Aid and the then-new to the area Save-A-Lot opened around 1986, and Snyder Plaza North with Caldor and Shop-Rite opened around 1987. Looking on HistoricAerials.com it looks like both centers used to just b...

Re: Genuardi's locations in PA
It was just announced today that the Genuardi's in Towamencin Village (Lansdale) will be closing in October; the article mentioned it's opening date was 10/17/1990, so it will be closing almost 20 years to the day.

Any unremodeled Eckerds left?
At this point (three years after the acquisition by Rite Aid), it seems that even the lowest volume former Eckerds have gotten the "Customer World" signage and paint job. The only two I know of 100% in the Philly area that haven't been touched are in North Coventry and northeast Philly (Ro...
