Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center

Ashland-Hanover Shopping Center in Ashland, Virginia. It was anchored at one end by Safeway (opened 1978 or 1979-ish), and at the other end by Richmond-based Ukrop's Super Markets (opened October 1980). Also in the shopping center originally were The Home Shop (local hardware store chain), Peeble's ...

Re: Vintage Supermarket Music

My first job was with Richmond-based Ukrop's Super Markets, in the late 1990's. Back then we were still using muzak which was piped in via FM radio. The technology was called Subsidiary Carrier Authorization, or SCA, and it's a process by which one or two AM signals can be sent as part of an FM broa...

Re: Old Albertsons store brands

One of the reasons why (I think) Albertsons bought Safeway was to gain access to their store brands, since SuperValu had killed most of the brands and kept others (like Wild Harvest). You may be right. I live about two hours from the closest Safeway, and I took a stroll through the Culpeper, VA sto...

Re: Safeway, Charlottesville, 1972

1968 aerial imagery (historicaerials.com) very clearly shows a building situated at approximately 850 W Main St in Charlottesville, with a large parking area in front and on two sides. That building is no longer there. The current structure at 853 W Main St ("Blue Ridge Wine Excursions" according to...

Re:

Still looking for a build on the pictured Culpeper Safeway. There was an older location from the early 50's. I don't know if it was modified or rebuilt. How's this for digging up an old thread? I drove past this store tonight -- in fact, made a purchase at the somehow-still-open Safeway in Culpeper...

Re: Safeway TV Ads 1980-81

Both were great videos.

YouTube has quite a few of the Honest Day, Honest Deal commercials, but I haven't found any from the series I remember best, the "Nobody Does it Better for Less" and "Come Take a Look, Come See the Difference" commercials. Anyone found any of these?

Re: "Warehouse pricing" and grease pencils

Back when I worked for Ukrop's Super Markets in the late 90's, the stores maintained an "emergency kit" for use when the register system went offline. This usually wasn't due to power problems, as every store was generator-equipped; usually some greater catastrophe would have to take place with the ...

Elsewhere in that same edition you can see Grand Union's ad for Warehouse Pricing and a promise that they will always mark your items with the price.

"Warehouse pricing" and grease pencils

While researching something somewhat related, I came across this amusing article from the April 11, 1981 edition of the Free-Lance Star newspaper in Fredericksburg, VA: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=9WQQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=IYwDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6613,1824805&dq=free-lance+star+greenbrier+shopping+center&h...

Re: Fredericksburg, Virginia

Yes. That's the one. It's been a while since I've seen it... looking at all these grocery stores over the years, sometimes the various arches just run together! A Google Search of the local newspaper reveals there was once an A&P in that shopping center: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=lXAQAAAA...

Re: Fredericksburg, Virginia

The reason I asked -- and am still curious -- about Kroger's presence in Fredericksburg is that I seem to remember a building similar to that in the 2nd and 4th pictures in this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2313 located in.... gosh... I think it was called the Greenbr...

Re: Fredericksburg, Virginia

Actually Safeway has been gone from Fredericksburg since the 90s. The nearest Safeways are in Culpeper and Woodbridge. Since the sale of Ukrops, the Fredericksburg store was closed (on 1/31) because it was not part of the sale. This store was rumored to be closing for some time but I think the Gian...

You're probably right. The lack of any exterior modifications is what's throwing me off.

A specific example... the "Fresh Produce" lettering, and "Fresh Quality" signage in two positions along the side wall.

Mystery Safeway interior decor - Richmond, VA

I stumbled across some interior photos of the still-abandoned Safeway on Glenside Drive in Richmond, and am curious if anyone here has seen this particular interior treatment in any other Safeways? I have not come across it elsewhere, and have to admit that it looks really low-budget (especially the...
