Re: Big M
Big M (at one time marketed as Midstate Markets as well) was a franchised outfit supplied by Penn Traffic out of Syracuse, which ran the now-defunct P&C chains. By and large most Big M's are in out of the way villages and hamlets in the rural areas. They were spread throughout the usual Penn Tra...

Re: Great American
The Sherburne GA is now the Big M or whatever. The New Berlin store was demolished and is now the site of a Stewart's Shoppe. The sole remaining Great American's in Chenango County are Greene, Afton, and Bainbridge. There are also Great American stores operating in Sidney, Unadilla, and I think West...

Re: Great American
Thanks for the pic, NYSW. Great pic of a classic GA store from the era of the mid-80s makeover, with the brown trim. Love it!

Re: Great American
Chenango County Historical Society might be able to help. The grandson of the company's founder, (W.H. Dunne) lives in the area as well. They might be able to find out. I do know the name dates to about the era you suspect. Larger market stores were changed to the GA banner, smaller markets remained...

Re: Great American
Nice list. Minor quibble- the Greene location did become, and still is, a Great American.
Cincinnatus became a GA but recently closed under the Shur-Fine banner.
Thanks!

Re: Great American
I believe all of the Loblaw's in your previous two posts remained Great American stores up until the bitter end. I believe one or two still run as independent grocery stores.

Re: Great American
NYSW, i have to believe I am wrong. No way was VM supplying anything west of Onondaga county, especially way out in the Buffalo area. Maybe the Waterville store was an ex-Victory, or a special deal, of else I am entirely wrong. I do know VM supplied area nursing homes and small general stores with g...

Re: Great American
I am about 90% certain that there was a U Pump 'Em on Upper Front Street in Binghamton, where US 11 veers left and NY 12 begins, on the current site of Lowe's. That site I recall also hosted a Great American store.

Re: Great American
I believe the New Berlin location was a Peter Pumpkin in the 70s, and the IGA in Morris, NY was once either a Peter Pumpkin or a Victory. That store is now I believe a Big M owned by Marquit's out of New Berlin. The gas stations were "U Pump Em". I believe they folded up in the early-mid 8...

Re: Great American
I believe Victory Markets also supplied a few independent franchisees under the Food King name, but the only one I am aware of is the store still operating in Waterville, NY. Can anyone verify this for me?

Re: Great American
Also, the former A&P executive was Aaron Malinsky, who had no intention of running a grocery chain, he bought it to break up and sell the real estate, particularly in the Utica and Binghamton markets. Sadly, the loss of Great Americans has left "food deserts" of sorts in isolated areas...

Re: Great American
Great American operated two stores in Norwich, NY. #424 was the local flagship at the corner of North Broad Street and Mitchell St. Managers there frequently moved into district manager or buyer positions. #436 was in the south plaza, now a Save-a-Lot. There was a store on Grand Blvd. in Johnson Cit...

Re: Grocery Stores in Malls
There was a Great American supermarket in the Arnot Mall in Horseheads, NY during the mid 70's. The mall was, at the time, pretty small with an Iszard's Department Store (a local store) and a JC Penney, along with a handfull (maybe 25) of other smaller stores. It was small, but a real mall. When Ar...

Re: Redner's Warehouse Market in Middletown, NY is Closing
Chopper and Wegman's also compete in the Binghamton, NY Market, where Weis recently completed the purchase of the locally owned Giant chain from the Akel family. Weis could make sense if they are looking to increase their footprint into NY state. I believe they at one time had a store in Elmira. Weg...
