Re: Hughes La Habra
I remember seeing ads for Hughes/El Rancho Markets, but ours was just plain Hughes. Never did see the El Rancho locations. Hughes bought El Rancho in 1979. The El Rancho locations were in Arcadia, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Irvine, Laguna Hills, and an area of Newpor...

I used to go to the Hughes in what was once referred to as Glendale, on 3075 N San Fernando Rd. It was a small store and was close to the distribution center by the 2 Freeway. This was in the early 70's and across the street from the market was a Van de Kamp restaurant. The market is now a Shims Bar...

There is a Big Boy in Glendale on Glenoaks next to the DMV that was still operating last year i believe. Also there was one in the Eagle Rock Plaza that is now some fast food joint. And not too far down on Colorado Blvd was another Bob's and across the street from it was a Corperate or Distric offic...

I remember going to the opening of the plaza in early 1977. It had a JC Penneys, Montgomery Wards, and a Broadway. It didn't do to well from what i remember, and by the early 90's closed down. It has been sitting vacant for over 10 years. Not sure why it hasn't been re developed. Tho i've not been b...

The Zodys stores that were converted to Food 4 Less after Ralphs are still Food 4 Less. The Hollywood store at 5420 Sunset Blvd. is my favorite. The decore is beautiful on the outside with a big entrance. It has not been kept up and i can only imagine how it looked when Zodys opened it in 1971. Also...

The Ralphs Giant was a failed concept from the beginning. Ralphs took over 14 Zodys Dept. stores and leased some of the space to Thrifty's (Thrifty Jr) while never really knowing how to utilize all that space (some stores had 100,000 sq feet). Also trying to create an identity for the Giant from Ral...

The Kmart in Covina had a District office next to it. it was added sometime in the early 90's if i'm correct. The Kmart in West Covina started out as a Save Co. in the early 60's then by 1970 was a Cal Store until Kmart moved in sometime in 1977 or 78. It also had a Vendome Liquor which opened on No...
