Safeway Michigan Ave NE Washington DC

In 1957 Safeway opened a new store at 1825 Michigan Ave NE, the store was expanded in 1967 when a marina style addition was built. Ultimately the store was closed around 1988 after the buyout. Today the building is still standing and is part of a large church complex but has been heavily modified. A...

Re: Washington, D.C.-Georgetown-Video from 1980

I agree, this is the Georgetown Safeway, Store #1200. According to my information the store opened in May 1980. I worked in this store in 1990 and it had been totally remodeled by then, but I do recognize the arched front windows/facade (these were bricked in sometime after I left).

Re: NEW: Hagerstown MD, 1922-2021

An old store list I have for Safeway has the 1970s store at 18760 North Village, a half block over at the intersection with Longmeadow. Currently the building is subdivided into a CVS, a Dollar store, and a liquor store. They may have rerouted the roads at some point, causing the change in addresses.

Company Publications

When I worked for Safeway years ago they had a corporate magazine that came out monthly called Safeway News. It was about 10 pages total, had a slick, glossy finish, and while there was some color it was basically black and white photography. The articles consisted of puff pieces on different aspect...

Re: Acme to IGA conversion, Keyser, WV

It would make sense that there was nothing in the 70s photo, I first heard about the plans to build the store in the early-mid 80s. Then, after the LBO it was probably in the first round to closures/sales.

Re: Acme to IGA conversion, Keyser, WV

Safeway had a store in Keyser also back in the 80s but I have never been able to nail down the exact location. I believe it was where the Martin's is just up the street from this Acme but I am not certain.

Re: Safeway Super Stores and Marketplaces (1977-1994)

In the Washington DC Division the full name of the Food Barns was "Price Slasher Food Barn" with Price Slasher in a smaller font on the street signs. In the Richmond Division they only converted one store to Food Barn, Colonial Heights in Feb-March 1983. Some time later I believe they plan...

Re: History of Safeway in King George, VA

You are right, when Safeway pulled out of Richmond in '93 the only stores left were in the actual metro area and Fredericksburg. That said, in the late '80s Safeway closed or sold all the remaining out laying stores in the Richmond Division, closed the warehouse, and administratively combined the re...

Re: History of Safeway in King George, VA

I don't know the exact dates but the store number (#355 in the Richmond Division) and the colonial exterior styling are from the early 1970s. There are other examples of this style store in Northern Virginia (Telegraph Road and Beacon Mall in Alexandria) and Paterson Avenue in Richmond. All three of...

Re: Hollin Hall Shopping Center Mount Vernon, VA

Rich is correct, the Rite Aid was a Drug Fair. The Variety Store, surprisingly has been there as long as I can remember (mid to late 60s). The hardware store has been there a long time also.

Re: Safeway before 1999

As a former employee on the East Coast (Richmond and Washington DC Divisions then the Eastern Division when they were merged) I can only address what was done here. That said, the early 90s stores were very generic, they had no front windows and were very industrial in appearance. Inside there were ...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on

In the 1950s before they palletized the Washington DC Division Safeway used a conveyor system to unload trucks. Sections of rollers were set up from the truck, through a small door in the stores wall, and into the stockroom. Inside the store, clerks would pull the stock off and sort it to the approp...

Re: Safeway in NC

Safeway had four stores in NC: The Outer Banks, Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, and Goldsboro (if memory serves). I believe all four stores were closed when the Richmond Division was merged with DC. As for Tidewater there were quite a few stores. I remember stores in Glouster, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, ...

Safeway in Kansas City

On a trip to KC last month I stumbled across what appears to be an old Safeway-Super S combo in Independence. The buildings are vacant but relatively unaltered. The building is not a marina but has a stone facade like many western Safeways. Another clue is the awning across the front of the building...

Re: Safeway, Charlottesville, 1972

I think the Kroger at Barrocks Road is actually on the old Super Fresh site. I believe the Safeway was on the south end of the center (closest to the college) where Old Navy is now. Yesterday I was in Charlottesville and got a quick look and from the side you can see where the building has been buil...
