Re: 1980's Supermarket Explosion.

The only major mid-1980s supermarket explosion anywhere near Ohio that I could find in newspapers.com involved a Foodland in South Charleston, West Virginia, on October 17, 1983. This is from the Akron Beacon Journal on October 18, 1983 (newspapers.com doesn't have the Cleveland Plain Dealer): https...

Re: Alphy's Coffee Shops

Duke University has digitized a black and white photograph of an Alphy's sign (along with an Alpha Beta sign and a Save On Drugs sign) on a marquee. No location or date is given in the caption. The name of the four-lane main street is not visible, but "Clark" was a cross-street at a signalized inte...

Re: Florida Choice

There's a 1987 Florida Choice commercial at 3:20 of this YouTube video , and you will see the logo. Living in a Florida Choice area at the time, I also remember occasional Kroger Dairy commercials (can't find any examples on YouTube, but it was animated cows singing "mo-ooo-ooo-ooove over to Kroger"...

Re: Supermarket Sweep TV Show from 1967

Imagine how amazing a complete run of the original "Supermarket Sweep" might be. The Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago actually has a fair portion of the run of the original "Supermarket Sweep" in its collection. They were available for viewing at their previous museum location, so pres...

Re: Loews Theatres 1905-2006

Ironically, AMC also inherits the history of Loews Theatres, RKO Century Theatres [RKO Stanley Warner Theatres, Century Theates , Rugoff/Cinema 5 Theatres, Stanley Warner Theatres, RKO Theatres, Keith-Orpheum-Albee Theatres, and The Stanley Company of America] ... Not sure what's ironic about that ...

Re: Circuit City

Surprisingly it's still abandoned after over a year. Not too surprising, given the state of the economy. The Circuit City on Victory Boulevard in Van Nuys, CA, also the "plug" exterior, appeared to be set to be occupied by a thrift store -- there were even exterior signs put up circa November-Decem...

Re: Two old Foodlands in the Pittsburgh area close

Looks like the store at 5821 Library Road, Bethel Park, not too far from Castle Shannon, is still open. (Not quite as visible via Street View as the closed two, since it doesn't face the street.)

Re: Unimart in Los Angeles?

Folks: A little to add about Unimart ... There was a location in North Hollywood at the NW corner of Victory & Vineland. Seems odd, because that's only a couple miles from the Hollywood Way and Vanowen location (the current Fry's). ( Second photo, showing the building .) In this comment page , on t...

Re: A big discovery: 1976 Safeway California map!

Bumping this thread because of an article about parking meters that ran in the L.A. Times on Sunday -- with accompanying photo showing a Safeway on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood in 1949.

Re: Tampa Bay Area Photos

I've posted a Tampa Bay area history timeline for your amusement: http://www.groceteria.com/place/southeast/tampa-bay-area/tampa-bay-area-history-timeline/ It can obviously be improved (and will). It's currently a little Pinellas County-centric, because I had the St. Pete newspaper archives as a ma...

Re: Glen Bell, Founder of Taco Bell, Dies

Obituary from the L.A. Times. I'd love to see the late-'60s ads referred to: "defining and picturing the menu items, listing ingredients and explaining how to pronounce them."

Judging by the stacked sign out front, I'm thinking this could have been a Wal-Mart at one time. I'm not 100% confident about that. Not a Wal-Mart -- they weren't in Tam...

Re: Former IHOP locations

On the '67 list, both Burbank, CA and Tampa, FL (S. Dale Mabry) are still IHOPs. Burbank has a renovated interior -- including, sadly, a drop ceiling. Not sure of the interior status of that Tampa location.
