Re: Supermarket Sweep, 1967
I enjoy the YouTube commenter saying, "'The Invaders' premiered Jan 10, 1967; the original 'Supermarket Sweep' ran until July of that year, so yes, Jan. 17, 1967 would have been about right." Or you could, you know, precisely date this episode to January 17, 1967, within the first 10 secon...

Re: Food Fair/Fox Markets SoCal locations in 1964
That Fox Markets address in Van Nuys is missing a digit, and my best guess is 14909 Magnolia (that's the northwest corner of Magnolia and Kester, which is currently home to a relatively new apartment building) -- plausible based on Historic Aerials imagery.

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)
The new Netflix movie "White Noise," which takes place in Ohio in 1984, recreated an A&P for this exterior shot, and for several extended scenes that take place in the interior. I strongly suspect that this exterior was created using special effects (either completely or partially), an...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites
There were Jack in the Box locations in Florida in the 1970s as well. Family legend has it that 2-year-old me saw a sign and piped up from my car seat with, "That says 'Jack in the Box,'" recognizing it as being the same words that were printed on the side of one of my toys.

Re: Montgomery Ward 1999 closures
Tampa Bay FL 1980 Tampa Bay Center, 125,824 3302 W. Dr. M.L. King Blvd. This is, specifically, in the city of Tampa ("Tampa Bay, FL" is not a real place). When it opened, it represented an expansion of the Tampa Bay Center mall from two anchor stores to three -- Burdines and Sears were al...

Two 1990s mentions of Safeway: "Uh, Zoom Zip" by Soul Coughing ( Ruby Vroom album, 1994) includes the line, repeated several times, "Recombination, then Viacom, Safeway." (It's a mondegreen version of a line from a different song, "Jazz (We've Got)" by A Tribe Called Qu...

Re: NEW: First Round of Tampa Bay Updates
Looks like you did get the trickiest street name change, which is that the current Kennedy Boulevard name replaced Lafayette Street... and most of Grand Central Avenue... and some of Memorial Highway.

Re: NEW: First Round of Tampa Bay Updates
Tampa is my hometown (but I haven't lived there in over 20 years), and the location list appears to be your usual excellent work -- everything from my memory that I've looked up seems to be accurate. A couple street name notes: Michigan Avenue is the former name of Columbus Drive, and Buffalo Avenue...

Re: 1980's Supermarket Explosion.
The only major mid-1980s supermarket explosion anywhere near Ohio that I could find in newspapers.com involved a Foodland in South Charleston, West Virginia, on October 17, 1983. This is from the Akron Beacon Journal on October 18, 1983 (newspapers.com doesn't have the Cleveland Plain Dealer): https...

Re: Alphy's Coffee Shops
Duke University has digitized a black and white photograph of an Alphy's sign (along with an Alpha Beta sign and a Save On Drugs sign) on a marquee. No location or date is given in the caption. The name of the four-lane main street is not visible, but "Clark" was a cross-street at a signa...

There's a 1987 Florida Choice commercial at 3:20 of this YouTube video , and you will see the logo. Living in a Florida Choice area at the time, I also remember occasional Kroger Dairy commercials (can't find any examples on YouTube, but it was animated cows singing "mo-ooo-ooo-ooove over to Kr...

Imagine how amazing a complete run of the original "Supermarket Sweep" might be. The Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago actually has a fair portion of the run of the original "Supermarket Sweep" in its collection. They were available for viewing at their previous muse...

Ironically, AMC also inherits the history of Loews Theatres, RKO Century Theatres [RKO Stanley Warner Theatres, Century Theates , Rugoff/Cinema 5 Theatres, Stanley Warner Theatres, RKO Theatres, Keith-Orpheum-Albee Theatres, and The Stanley Company of America] ... Not sure what's ironic about that ...

Re: Circuit City
Surprisingly it's still abandoned after over a year. Not too surprising, given the state of the economy. The Circuit City on Victory Boulevard in Van Nuys, CA, also the "plug" exterior, appeared to be set to be occupied by a thrift store -- there were even exterior signs put up circa Nove...
