Re: Board Back Online

Gang:

Since the board had the crash back in May, the "View Active Topics" has never worked for me, whether logged in or not. It always returns zero.

Anyone else having this problem--or am I doing something wrong?

Re: Pioneer Chicken

Folks:

Was in LA again over the weekend of October 8 & 9. The Pioneer Chicken at Olympic & San Vicente had an illuminated "Open" sign on it, lights were on, and people were inside.

Looks to me that this branch is still operating!

Re: Pioneer Chicken

Apparently Pioneer is slowly going into history. The Hollywood store was evicted last year, the store off Sunset closed last year and apparently so did the location on Olympic/San Vicente... Folks: I was in LA over this last weekend, taking a trip on San Vicente. I passed the Pioneer Chicken in the...

Re: McDonalds

... and a real small one in Fremont on Grimmer that was really small. And now from the other end of the state. I moved to Fremont in 1985 and the Grimmer location was my nearest McDonald's. It was pretty small, Mansard design--the interior done up in a Carousel motif. Carousel horse pictures on the...

Re: Older McDonald's Locations

Hi, Gang! The McDonald's at 12919 Victory Blvd (North Side, just West of Coldwater) in North Hollywood has an interesting history. The original burger stand at this location was called Peek's (or maybe Peak's) and looked much like the early McDonald's building design--including the number of burgers...

Re: Kentucky Roast Beef?

There was a Kentucky Roast Beef on the West side of Lankershim, between Erwin and Sylvan in North Hollywood (somewhere around 6200 or 6300 Lankershim). I don't think it was open very long as a KRB. A look at Google Maps shows that the building is still there, with a lot of recognizable features from...

Re: Former IHOP locations

One location of note: The IHOP in Valley Plaza is still there at 6540 Laurel Canyon Blvd. This IHOP was originally a House of Pies and converted sometime in the late (?) 1960s to the pancake house. This might trigger another topic--but I know of only one House of Pies remaining in the LA area, way n...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Bachelor In Paradise (1961) - OK Bob Hope movie with scenes in an LA-area Hughes supermarket. BTW: The IMDB gives the address of this Market as 8231 Woodman Avenue, Panorama City. That is not correct, but I have seen this on some other websites related to the film. The correct location is 14620 Par...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Bachelor In Paradise (1961) - OK Bob Hope movie with scenes in an LA-area Hughes supermarket. From some of the scenes in the store - apparently Hughes was an IGA affiliate in the early 60s' - there were several posters in the store with prominent IGA logos! Sorry, gang--couldn't figure out how to q...

Re: Disappearing Sizzlers in your area

There were a couple of Sizzlers near me in Fremont. One , in the late 70s/early 80s buffet style was at the corner of Fremont Blvd & Peralta, and closed somewhere around the late 1980s or early 90s. It became a Chinese Buffet--called something like Uncle Sam's which in turn closed a few years ag...

Re: W T Grant

There was also a W.T. Grant in Panorama City, CA on the Southeast Corner of Van Nuys Boulevard and Chase Street. Can't tell you much more about the store as I don't think I ever set foot in there. Sometime after the store closed, a Savings and Loan moved in--probably Great Western Savings as the spa...

Re: PW Markets Closing all stores

Interesting to hear the history about the Fremont site. I know the strip center you are talking about, with Smart & Final and the Urgent Care clinic. I could tell it used to be a supermarket but couldn't tell just what. I was told by long-time locals that the Alpha-Beta was a different, now-dem...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

Quaker also purchased the Comapny that makes Rice A Roni, SanLeandro Pasta and is also a famous Chocolate Maker ( The name escapes me) Hi! I believe the Company purchased was Golden Grain--who at the time owned Ghirardelli Chocolate. Quaker sold off Ghirardelli, which eventually became a subsidiary...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

Anyone remember Rondo? It was a lemon soda that had its origins in Australia and was distributed by Coke. It came out in the late 70s and seemed to disappear in the 80s Ah, yes. Rondo. If I remember correctly, Rondo had two lives. It was first introduced as some sort of "high class" soda ...
