Re: Dillon's @ 1402 E. 20th, Joplin MO

Approaching 4 months since the tornado and, as far as I know, there's still no progress at the former Dillon's site or any real definitive word as to whether it's coming back or not. Like Terry K. posted above, there were initial reports that they would rebuild, but in the meantime I've also heard s...

Re: The two groceries of Seneca, MO

Quick update of sorts. Still don't know the history of the G&W building pre-Gene's, but since those awful pics were snapped they've finally removed that old signage and "modernized" the store. Kind of a shame, since I always enjoyed going in there just for the fact that it hadn't chang...

Sad to say, this cool old building was utterly destroyed by the tornado. Nothing stands there now except an empty lot.

Re: Mystery stores - 2609 E. 7th & 1701 S. Main, Joplin MO

Sadly I believe both of these got blown away in last Sunday's tornado. The Dillons on 20th is gone too =( For what it's worth, these stores are both still standing, even though I'm still not sure exactly what their grocery history is except for what's been mentioned above. The Dillons is indeed dea...

Re: Dillon's @ 1402 E. 20th, Joplin MO

If the interior is a mid-decade thing, that sounds about right - the last time I'd been in this store was probably six or seven years ago and it had still had the "old" interior then. I can't say I was too surprised to see it had changed, but it was still kinda disappointing considering it...

Re: Mystery stores - 2609 E. 7th & 1701 S. Main, Joplin MO

The store on S. Main looks like an older Safeway to me.....I was in there a few years back when it was a thrift store......and it had some Safeway remnants either on the wall graphics or doors or something.....it looks a lot like another former Safeway in Hutchinson, KS. I think you're right. I wen...

Mystery stores - 2609 E. 7th & 1701 S. Main, Joplin MO

Not much of a shot of this first building on 7th (the old Route 66, incidentally), but the exterior's been so heavily remodeled in the past year or two that it wouldn't matter much anyway. This was an Aldi store in the late '80s all the way up til a couple years ago when they abandoned it for a new ...

Dillon's @ 1402 E. 20th, Joplin MO

This is (what seems to me, anyway) a fairly old-looking Dillon's store here that's still going strong. I'm not sure how long it's been a Dillon's, though it's at least as far back as 1985. I think perhaps the walls inside had been repainted since I was last in this store several years ago, but if no...

Former Thriftway IGA @ 2502 S. Main, Joplin MO

Just a couple quick snaps of a store that was a Thriftway IGA for many years until the mid/late '90s when the IGA chain seemed to disappear from the area. Now it's a sports bar. Not sure if this building had been another store prior to the IGA. It's not visible in these pics, but this store also had...

Anyone know about the Consumers chain?

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/lugnut58/consum.jpg These stores were absolutely ubiquitous here in my little area of Southwest Missouri (and NE Oklahoma) throughout the '80s and first half or so of the '90s, when they up and disappeared altogether, but were for a time far and away the bigge...

Re: Phoenix - Remembering Smitty's

I know I'm late to this thread here, but if anyone was still looking for some images of Smitty's and the logo, I've got a few I grabbed from vidcaps of old VHS tapes I did a while back. These were aired in the Joplin MO area in 1995, but I'd assume (perhaps wrongly) that the store-styles carried ove...

Possible former Kroger? 3222 S. Main Joplin, MO

I'd never really thought about this building being a former grocery until seeing pics of the Kroger Superstore design here on the forum, and suddenly those arched entrances seemed awfully familiar... http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/lugnut58/mays.jpg What do you think? It's got a couple things...

Re: Long John Silver's freestanding stores

In my little area of Southwest Missouri, the free-standing LJS doesn't yet appear to be becoming an endangered species. There's two fairly old stores still operating in Joplin MO, and one built in the mid/late '90s in Neosho. I do think the one in nearby Miami, OK may have become integrated with a T...

The two groceries of Seneca, MO

Hi everyone, first post here so hopefully I don't screw it up too bad. I noticed there seems to be a bit of a lack of Missouri stores here, so I thought maybe I could contribute something, starting with the two stores in my (tiny) hometown of Seneca. Unfortunately, I know very little about the histo...
