Re: Smith's Food King in Socal--with store locations
Help me solve a question. According to fellow Downeyites, 10231 Lakewood, Downey CA used to be a Smith's Food King. I remember it as a Market Basket. It's now a Pep Boys. It was originally a Raisin's.

That looks like a former Naugles. Stand alone Green Burrito locations are still around. Some are in strip malls like the one in Apple Valley.

Re: Cold Stone closings...replaced by Thrifty's?
Cold Stone seems to have a lot of franchisees furious with them. So I'm guessing the likelihood they just wanted out of their contract and switched to something else. I understand the Thrifty's ice cream stores are found in AZ, but to my knowledge this is the first in CA. Now I'm going to have some ...

Re: Sears Hardware, dead chain?
In California, Sears bought Orchard Supply Hardware, which itself had acquired several locations from Builders Emporium, and converted the few Sears hardware stores here to OSH.

Cold Stone closings...replaced by Thrifty's?
A local Cold Stone located inside a gas station closed, and was replaced by a Thrifty's Ice Cream store. Outside of Mexico, I've never seen one outside of a Rite Aid. I knew Cold Stone was having problems with its franchisees, but it came as a surprise Rite Aid would sell Thrifty's franchises in Cal...

Re: Pavillions ever in Victorville?
Question=in the center with the former site (now furniture store)...there was a Sav-On, which I assumed became a CVS. Across the street at the new store, there was a LONGS. With CVS acquiring LONGS after Sav-On, which site is CVS running? Did the vacant drugstore become something else? The Sav-On c...

Re: Pavillions ever in Victorville?
The furniture store directly across the street from the Victorville store was also a Vons until around 1989 when the new present-day location was built. I had heard a while ago that the store may have been originally planned as a Pavilions, but was changed as a result of the purchase of Southern Cal...

Re: That used to be a department store?!
The old Sears in Victorville, CA was used as a thrift store for several years before becoming a church. For years they still had the roll-up doors from the old auto department which have now been covered up. When JCPenney closed their Treasury stores, the location in Buena Park became a racquetball ...

So the brand is still around and owned by the same franchisor that owns the California Wienerschnitzels (never seen one go out of business until this week), but what happened that caused the implosion of the chain in the 80's? They were everywhere! Too many locations? And I've seen some of them conv...
