Re: Beckley, WV chain grocery/supermarket locations

A quick stop on my way home from Detroit and Toledo has allowed me to update this list through 2010:

Posted this to Twitter yesterday, but I thought people here might enjoy it too. This is south of Monroe, Michigan.

Re: NEW: Portland (Oregon) 1932-1987

Also interesting was the Fred Meyer at 6939 NE Sandy (which is now a parking lot for a Safeway just to the west at 6901 NE Sandy) There was one house where the owner refused to sell to make way for the store, and Fred Meyer basically built the store around it. A picture can be found here: https://r...

OK. It apparently happened again this afternoon. I'll be keeping an eye on this as I have time while I'm on the road.

Board back online

I'm not sure how long it was down as I've been traveling and not monitoring it. Fortunately I just needed to run one SQL query to repair a table. Let me know if anything goes awry!

NEW: East Bay/Alameda County

The first chunk of a section that will also include Oakland and Berkeley at some point. It's always find to go back to the region where this party started:

Re: NEW: Portland (Oregon) 1932-1987

Because of its...well, colossal footprint, it seems that the city and the directory publishers couldn't make up their mind what address to give the location: It was listed variously at 4133, 4145, 4145-4151, and 4161 NE Sandy Blvd, and at 1831 and 1844 NE 41st Ave. Actually, the original Fred Meyer...

Actually the author of that article is a Seattle historian who has contributed to the message board and interacts with the Twitter feed as well. It’s a great article; he’s done some great research in Seattle.

Re: Mystery Store - 15031 Middlebelt Road, Romulus, MI

To be honest, I’m pretty certain that it was never a chain supermarket, based on the siting and the size when I looked at it in Google Maps. If anything, it may have been a small local grocery store or even a drugstore. It was clearly built in the 1950s, and any major supermarket would have been muc...

I knew they were being acquired but was holding the very faintest of hopes that the name might at least be spared based on something I read but apparently did not save. 99% sure that wouldn't have happened anyway...

Re: The "Kohl Bros." chain name mystery (Milwaukee, WI)

David, could you please double-check your notes to confirm whether Kohl's was listed in the 1930 and 1935 Milwaukee directories as "Kohl Bros.," "Kohl Maxwell," or something else entirely? I'm dying to get to the bottom of this. 1930.jpg 630 East Lincoln Avenue (96 in 1930 before renumbering) was l...
