Re: Thunder Bay, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1975-2019

Great stuff and more thoughts to follow, but the interior package at the Centennial Square store doesn’t even really look modified. The paint job behind the departmental signage with the contrasting sans-serif font was actually part of the later versions of that Safeway interior package. That’s a pr...

Re: Missoula, MT chain grocery/supermarket locations, 1925-59

There’s also the Smiths Food and Drug that apparently opened in a former Albertsons following the 1998-99 American Stores merger. This seems to follow the same sequence that happened in Northern California, where Albertsons abandoned its own locations in favor of recently acquired Lucky stores. Krog...

Re: Texas Updates

I assure you that there are city directories for Houston that exist past 1986 (a point in the mid-1980s is missing, though for phone books AND directories); but they're only in the Houston downtown library and Rosenberg. I’ll take your word for it; the library catalog doesn’t show anything after 19...

Re: Texas Updates

FYI, Houston is on my "soon" list, but I currently only have data through 1982. It looks like they may have stopped publishing city directories for Houston by 1986.

Re: Late '50s Dominions with identical architecture

This is excellent. They're beautiful stores, too. I'm wondering if this location on Broadview Avenue in Toronto, now a Loblaws, might have been a variant. The side has been painted, but the rear looks familiar. This one opened as Dominion in the late 1950s. It's one of my favorite Toronto stores. Go...

Toledo Debut

As promised, I've finished adding lots of content and the new Toledo section is now officially ready: https://www.groceteria.com/place/ohio/toledo/ Thanks to the files of the Toledo Public Library, the location list was already better documented than most. This is the model I'm hoping to go with for...

Chain store density, 1930

U.S. chain store density, 1930: some "quickie" research that might become more rigorous (in an academic sort of way) later.

Great to see this. That ad campaign and jingle actually played a part in one of the most pivotal moments in the first "Tales of the City" books, as part of the description of the Marina Safeway and its role as a pick-up spot.
