Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992

Safeway had both Food Barn and Liquor Barn branded stores in operation at the time of the KKR buyout. In both cases they were usually small Safeway stores converted to a no-frills grocery or liquor format. Liquor Barn was ahead of it's time and similar to BevMo!. In fact several of the Liquor Barn ...

Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992

Interesting. I'm working on Wichita right now by request to help a colleague who's writing a book. It will be interesting to see how things played out a bit west of Kansas City.

I'll probably backtrack and do Kansas City, Kansas when I finish Wichita.

Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992

I feel pretty comfortable that the Grand Union stores in KC were a separate, local chain. It's entirely possible they were connected to the New York chain, but this seems like an odd location for them to choose since they had largely no presence whatsoever in between. A&P most likely entered the mar...

Looks similar to A&P's Futurestore design.
The Loblaws prototype has less glass and a much bigger footprint, but yeah, there are some similarities.

Re: The oldest Loblaws store in operation?

Moore Ave in Toronto would be another contender for oldest store still operating as Loblaws. There is a pre-1960 store underneath all that. It actually hasn't even been enlarged all that much. I've been in this one in the past year and it still has the "feel" of its original layout. Ditto Isabella ...

A Dominion opened up at an unnumbered location on the east side of Ingersoll Road by 1966, and this store may have also existed in 1960. I'd wager a guess that this location is now 171.
I'm almost certain you're correct about this.

I'll have this list added by tomorrow. Thanks!

Richard Longstreth's books are all pretty much amazing. I actually just got around to starting his (2007?) book on the history of department stores recently. I can't recommend him highly enough.
