What if they tore down the Food Fair but left the pylon?
It would look something like this oddity in suburban Harrisburg PA. I drove by it the other night and thought “that looks like a Food Fair pylon But there’s no building there.” Turns out they tore down the store about six years ago but left the pylon (see “before” image from Google Street View). 44D...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
I would guess that many chains had colonial prototypes—I’ve seen Acmes like this. The Pick-n-Pay chain in Cleveland had at least one free standing store like this. National Tea had a very few stores like this—I recall one in Alliance, Ohio. Safeway (particularly in the DC area) and Grand Union as w...

Re: Unidentified former Safeway in west Fresno
Per my Fresno research from 25 years ago it was gone before 1970. I’m on vacation right now but I’ll see if I can pin that date down with newspaper sources when I have time.

Re: Jewel in SoCal?
Jewel Tea (the actual tea shops and delivery business) had SoCal stores early on and delivery through at least the 1970s, per some LA Times references, but no locations of the supermarket chain AFAIK. And Sav-on Drugs was rebranded as Osco for a time. I wonder if either of those things might have ca...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
I did figure out how to save a Newspapers.com clipping as a JPG file and then upload as many as three of them as attachments to a post. However, because the JPG attachments could not be enlarged, I decided to delete those attachments. And unfortunately, posting a lot of those clippings as JPGs beco...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
Although I cannot figure out how to post an image from Newspapers.com that allows one to zoom in, I think I figured out a way to share a link which allows one to view an image or article (and enlarge it) properly. Great that you provided these, but for the record the links only work for those who h...

NEW: Columbus GA, 1925-2024
More interesting than I expected, and there were so very many independent chains, franchises, and co-ops.

Re: Grand Union
Looks to have been a Grand Union new build, circa 1998, to replace a store that burned down.

Re: NEW: Vancouver WA, 1928-2000
I may have misread the year on Google Streetview. I did a newspaper archive search on the address and references ended about 2007 as well, so maybe I over-assumed.

Re: NEW: Vancouver WA, 1928-2000
Thanks. These are updated. The Padden Pkwy location did not make the list because it was apparently only open between about 2003 and 2007, which was outside the range of the list. But I have added a note about it.

Major Montréal Update
This one was a challenge and it had all the big issues: City directories were basically useless after 1960 so I had to scour newspspers for ads with locations, which were not very common. Metro and Richelieu stores were generally not branded as such for much of the period covered, so I have to re;y ...
