Re: Los Angeles-1960s-Supermarket on La Brea Avenue-Mentioned in 1965 Picture "The Loved One"

In the 1965 picture "The Loved One," the character Mr. Joyboy refers to "the giant supermarket, the one on La Brea Street." See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOMm86R_67w Does anyone know if that was a reference to a real supermarket? I assume that he meant La Brea Avenue in L...

Re: Food 4 Less & Fleming Cos./Food 4 Less history

It will be interesting to find the answer to this one. I remember Fleming expanding rapidly in the 90's by acquiring everything they could could get their hands on and they were also supplying Kmart with groceries. But then they crashed and burned in a very short period of time in the early 2000's.

Re: Kmart and Safeway 1998

Again, as it has been pointed out, by 1998, Safeway was wading into dangerous territory with the acquisitions of "some regional grocery stores it had no business running". A more accurate description would have been "some regional grocery stores it had no business ruining . The acqui...

Re: Kmart and Safeway 1998

It seems like the only synergy would have been on the distribution side because KMart didn't have a strong distribution network on the grocery side of the business and Safeway obviously did. This would have allowed KMart to try and catch up with WalMart at a faster pace.

1980: About 45 +/- stores in California and Nevada operating as Mayfair and Low Cost Discount Foods. All the California stores were in the Southern part of the state except for the three stores mentioned in the above post and included stores in Oxnard, Ventura, Bakersfield (2), San Diego (5), El Ce...

Re: Former marina Safeways in SoCal

One marina in SoCal I've seen before on photos online but haven't yet been to is the Vons in Long Beach (4th Street?), not even sure it is still there as the last time I saw a photo of that location might be a full decade ago. The store at Atlantic and Broadway (two blocks south of 4th street) in L...

Re: Selah Safeway

Before Steven Burd entered the picture Safeway bragged that they opened a new store on average every other day but conveniently left out that they closed a store just as often. This went on for many years. Mr. Burd didn't do the actual leg work on each new store after that. He simply approved the Re...

Re: El Rancho Market locations in Socal, 1979

I remember an El Rancho store in Yuma, Arizona at 4th Ave. and 16th St. That was a different chain acquired by Arden-Mayfair, Inc. in the 1950's or 60's that lasted until the mid 1980's. A lot of Latino markets still operate under that name in a lot pf places, such as this one in Los Angeles: https...

Those are both good examples. I found another former Crawford's with an exterior that is still intact. This store also became a Market Basket but was sold to Vons when Kroger shut down the division. It's currently an Asian market called 168 Market. https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0799496,-118.109561...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

I always wondered if the odd variety of hardwares was due to the various businesses they had owned previously. I remember for instance Office Max used Fujistu, Borders used NCR, Waldenbooks used IBM. Probably just a coincidence. There was really no reason for national chains to use unified POS hard...

The closest vintage market near you that is in original condition

I was driving through Glendale, CA last week and noticed a Ralphs Fresh Fare. This 36,000 sq. ft. store was built by Crawfords Markets in 1967 and then acquired by Kroger's Market Basket stores in the 1970's. In the early 80's it was one of several stores purchased by Ralphs when Kroger decided to d...
