Re: Hughes market La Habra ca
The old La Habra Blvd Northgate-Gonzalez store (#2 in that chain) was built in the late 1950s as an Alpha Beta. Many La Habrans worked at the AB distribution center or bakery and were loyal shoppers for many years. It was a Suttles Marked briefly before becoming Northgate.

Re: McCoy's Market, Whittier
Where was the "Whittier Downs" Shopping Center? What else was in it?
The McCoy's mom shopped at when I was a kid was in East Whittier, near the intersection of Leffingwell Road and Santa Gertrudes Ave., about a mile south of Whittwood.

Boston Store, Whittwood Mall (Whittier, CA)
In Whittier, CA at the Whittwood Mall, there was a small department store called Boston Store. I remember shopping there through the 1980s. Not sure if it was part of a chain or related to any other local store. I do remember hearing that it was formerly a Myers (Meyers) department store, which expl...

Re: Can anyone identify this mystery market in Whittier Ca?
It WAS an Albertsons in the 70s and early 80s.
My family did our wash at the laundromat in the same shopping center.
We would often buy detergent and snacks at that store. Or do some grocery shopping while our clothes were in the washer.

WOW! That triggered something long buried and forgotten.
Was the La Habra Beno's in an industrial building/industrial area?
I just remember a bright (yellow?) sign with black letters.

The distinctive TF building is still on the east side of Harbor, about a block south of La Habra.Dean wrote: La Habra CA
On Harbor Boulevard, just below Central Avenue/La Habra Boulevard. Not sure if still standing. Jeff?!

Re: Liquor Barn locations in LA & OC, 1985
The location on Beach Blvd. in La Habra had once been a Fed-Mart.
In the 1980s, the most of the shopping center was demolished to build a new Smith's. This later became Vons.
The only part still original to the 1970s is the Firestone on the northeast corner, facing Beach.

That store was a small Albertsons for many years. I think it closed in the mid-1980s.

1938 Balboa Market in Newport Beach set to be demolished
To build yet another beach parking lot!
From yesterday's Orange County Register:
http://www.ocregister.com/news/market-2 ... asian.html
I recall reading recently that the building housed an A&P or Safeway in it's early years, but now I can't find the source.

Nixon Market Demolished
The Stats Party Supply at 15801 Whittier Blvd. in Whittier has been torn down. Originally it was a semi-open "ranch" style market from the mid-1950s run by Richard Nixon's parents and brothers. The brick-facade rambling structure replaced their earlier gas station/market that was across th...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
I miss Fab One Shots. It was like a pair of fabric softener sheets with big holes. And one load's worth of powdered detergent stuffed between them. The soap dissolved (mostly) in the wash. And then the empty envelope was your fabric softener sheet in the dryer. Perfect for college kids. Ingenious. B...

Re: LA Safeways That Became Vons
The former Brea Safeway (Central/State College - Brea Blvd) is the tiniest Vons I've been in outside of Avalon (Catalina Island). The locals refer to it as Vons Junior. I think the Pavillions Place you were thinking of was in the Sunny Hills neighborhood of Fullerton - corner of Rosecrans and Euclid...

I remember lots of them in North Orange County CA. My cousin worked at one in the Riverside/Corona area.
Does anybody know what T, G, and Y stood for?
I don't know the connection to Wal-Mart.

Re: Beno's
There was also a Beno's in the (long demolished) La Mirada Mall in La Mirada, CA. We used to go there for back to school clothes, along with the adjacent Woolco and KMart down the street. Seemed like a clearance/outlet kind of place (Burlington Coat Factory is the closest approximation today) I reme...
