Re: Laneco

I think they also were called Food Lane at one time. I remember they had one store in the area of NE Pa. where I lived in the earli(er) 1970's in Moosic which is adjacent to Scranton. It was a new build store in the Birney Plaza which also featured an Arlans. Neither one lasted that long (a couple y...

Re: Old Safeway Venice CA.

Being a retired USPS employee (32 years as a City Carrier) I have to echo the "junkyard" comment about the place. Why did they choose to use the front parking lot to park their vehicles? It does make the place look very trashy. The Post Office has never gotten aesthetics right unfortunatel...

Also at around the 2:20 mark of the video, did I not see a glimpse of the A+P logo on one of the "magic carpet" mats outside? Pretty cool stuff.

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

I strongly suspect that this exterior was created using special effects (either completely or partially), and that the interior was built especially for the film, either on a soundstage or within an existing vacant store (not necessarily an A&P). https://i.imgur.com/jQLkQqa.jpg Absolutely agree...

Re: Lee's Discount Department Stores?

The Britt's name usually was used where Newberry had no existing identity. Gloversville, NY had BOTH a Newberry's and Britt's. Newberry's was located downtown and Britt's was in a shopping plaza built on the outskirts of town in the early '60's along an arterial highway. I even found a page from th...

Never saw wood shingles on a Loblaws facade. Was (or is) that common or just a one-off?

A+P Store Numbers

I recently acquired an A+P store manual on freshness control for dry grocery with a copyright date of 1941. As you can see, it was assigned to store 46. I'm presuming the signature stamp is that of either the Divisional President or Unit Head. Is there any way of finding out where this store was loc...

Re: list of ShopRite stores that became Pathmark in 1969

There were actually a couple dynamics at play here with Big V and Shoprite. First off, Big V accounted for around a quarter of Wakefern's sales volume so of course they couldn't afford to lose that. There was also the matter of a termination fee Big V would've had to pay if they left Shoprite and I ...

Re: list of ShopRite stores that became Pathmark in 1969

Most of SRS's stores are acquired from Big V in their bankruptcy in 2001, but I'm not sure about the two in NJ, Clark and Spotswood. The Big V situation completely slipped my mind but as I recall wasn't Pathmark trying to make a play for a large amount of those stores as well? If they had succeeded...

Re: list of ShopRite stores that became Pathmark in 1969

I noticed Clark, NJ on the list in the ad. Currently there is a very large high volume Shop-Rite directly across the street from this address. Where the Pathmark/Shop-Rite was at 49 Central Ave., there is now a Target which is listed as 45 Central Ave. Prior to that, it was a Bradlee's and even befo...

Re: NEW: Scranton, 1925-2021

Easiest way for me to do this is to work on the surrounding areas first which would be Moosic and Dunmore. -3512 Birney Ave. in Moosic was indeed an A+P and actually was rebranded as A-Mart when they were experimenting with that concept. Closure date seems about right. It actually was an outparcel b...

Re: NEW: Scranton, 1925-2021

First off, THANK YOU for posting this. I grew up in this area and it brings back a lot of good memories. Don't really have time to take this apart right now but one correction to begin with would be 601 Wyoming Ave. which is listed as A+P. Those were the offices of the Scranton Unit and later the Sc...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

Yep, other end of the strip was a Kmart that closed in 2017. Was Victory Market separate from Weis or was it another Mr Zs kind of thing where Weis bought them but kept the old name for a while. If anything, this was a one off and honestly my history of the area ended in June 1980 when we moved bac...

Was this store in the same plaza with the K-Mart? If so, it actually began life as a Victory Market back in the 70's.
