A&P Wyckoff, NJ

At the Route 208/Cedar Hill Avenue interchange stands a shopping center currently anchored by a Walgreens (formerly a Drug Fair that was acquired along with others when the chain went under a few years back). The architecture suggests the store originally opened as an A&P. Anyone have any info?

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

The Acme was at the north end of a strip mall where Passaic Avenue becomes Memorial Drive. When A&P took over the location, the building was expanded a bit. I'm not sure if the Super Saver awning still exists behind the new A&P facade. From aerial photos it's tough to tell. The store looked ...

Re: Acme in Franklin Lakes, NJ?

Market Basket isn't very deep- is it possible the business next door was also part of the Acme, and the space was subdivided? There is a window on the side that goes all the way to the ground- maybe that was the original entrance? I never knew about a bunch of stores being closed at once in the 70's...

closed Kings Super Markets in NJ

Does anyone remember Kings closing a few stores a few years ago? Anyone know the locations?

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

The original Succasunna store was built in the 50's and sat at the end of a strip mall close to Route 10, approximately where the moving theater parking lot now sits. When the strip mall burned down (late 70's? not sure), a new strip mall was built towards the rear of the site and a new Acme was par...

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

I'll have to check to see if it's still there. A Blockbuster closer to me just closed down. Acme didn't do much in the northern NJ market after the 1950s. A few A-frames in the late 60's (Verona, Midland Park, Plainfield), a few more "cottage" stores in the early 70s (New Providence, Port ...

Acme in Franklin Lakes, NJ?

I have records that indicate Acme had a store in Franklin Lakes at the intersection of Franklin Lakes and High Mountain Roads. I believe it was built in the 1960s, not sure when it closed down. Anyone have an idea where it was? The only commercial development is a strip mall in the northwest corner ...

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

Some of the stores made no sense but others did. Kings has proven that smaller stores can make money and I see no reason why Acme couldn't have made their older, smaller stores in places like Sparta, Montclair, Springfield and New Providence work. I heard that the company had very favorable leases a...

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

A Super Fresh in Absecon, NJ became an Acme for a few years before closing because the nearby Shoprite was too much to compete with. I think one of the Freehold or Malboro stores was once an A&P or Super Fresh? Or was built as one before Acme took over the lease? Here in northern NJ, Acme had a ...

Re: Acme Whippany

My list of stores that existed between 1963 and 1969 doesn't list a Whippany location so if one existed, it must have closed before 1963. The East Hanover location opened on 1/15/1960.

Re: Camden, NJ supermarkets

What is the exact location of the former Acme on Route 130 South? I have two listings for Acme stores in Camden and neither is on Route 130. Broadway & Mt. Vernon, opened 11/17/1948 (looks as though the building is gone and is now an empty lot) 200 Marlton avenue, opened 3/3/1954 (looks like a m...

Re: American Stores in Whippany, NJ, 1940's

I'm not sure how "recent" you mean by recently- if Acme had a store in Whippany, it hasn't been for decades. I know a store opened in the mid-50's on Route 10 in nearby East Hanover but I don't think it lasted very long (it's now Gogel- an automotive repair facility.) There is still an Acm...

Re: What exactly is (was?) a Pathmark "Super Center"?

A local Pathmark is called a "Super Center" on the exterior signage. The store doesn't seem unusually large and it doesn't carry anything out of the ordinary, although I'm not sure if that was always the case.

Re: Possible former Acme

The closest one I see is a location west on Marlton, I believe it's a Cousins Supermarket these days. There are plenty of other former Acme locations in the area. If you want to know more, check your private messages for my contact info.

Re: A&P in Randolph, Nj

It was knocked down to make room for the new shopping center, although I believe there was a small fire inside the building as it was being demolished.
