Re: Pantry Pride in Richmond, VA

Also, there once were Grand Union stores (but not Big Star stores as far as I know) in the DC suburbs in both Maryland and Virginia... I don't believe any of the DC-area GU stores became either Food Lion or Harris Teeter though. I could be wrong but I think it was way back around 1976 when GU left ...

Re: Iconic Store Designs

Regarding the Chambersburg, PA store, are all of you thinking of the Sunnyway grocery store that is on US 30 west of town? It was a Great Valu store at one point but is now not using that name. A friend of mine from college has family that has lived in Chambersburg for a couple of generations. He to...

Re: Iconic Store Designs

Here is a former 1970s Grand Union which is located on Columbia Pike in Arlington, VA. I'd be curious if this is what the poster upstream was thinking of for the late 1970s/early 1980s facade. Based on other pictures on Flickr this seems to be a fairly common Grand Union facade. https://www.flickr.c...

Re: Iconic Store Designs

I can think of a few in the mid-Atlantic region... Giant (MD)'s Cheese Grater stores from the 1960s. The now relocated Del Ray cheese grater store: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mjhale/15105599195/ Giant (PA)'s mirror front stores. I know this is more of a 1980s/1990s thing but to anyone in the know...

1950s Giant in Alexandria, VA with 1990s neon inerior

Opened in 1951 this is the oldest operating store in the Giant chain. It's last remodel was in the early 1990s when they installed the red neon decor package. It is a fairly complete example limited only by the size of the store (approx 17,000 sq feet). The block this store is on has been purchased ...

Re: Kroger in Washington DC

Is the Kroger that is listed on Arlington Blvd in Falls Church the building that is now Harvest Moon Chinese restaurant? The address matches to a residence further down Arlington Blvd. But a friend who grew up in Falls Church in the 1960s says Harvest Moon was either a Kroger or an A&P but she can't...

Re: 1960's era Giant in Alexandria,VA to close -only 16,000s

We must have been thinking the same thing. I'd planned to get pictures of the Del Ray store for some time and finally got down there on 8/31/14. I've know about this store for a long time and actually shopped there a few times when I lived in Alexandria in the late 1990s. I'd hit Shoppers in Potomac...

Old Grocery in Greencastle, PA?

I'm curious to know if this building is a former grocery store: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjhale/12904146145/ The building is located a couple of blocks east of the town square in Greencastle, PA. The building keystone says 1930. My other thought was this was some sort of department/variety store.

Kroger in Washington DC

I've been reading an interesting online book (http://sfp.ucdavis.edu/files/143750.pdf) about the Greenbelt (MD) Cooperative which owned a number of grocery stores around the DC area in the 1950s through the 1970s. What is interesting is that the books discusses the Cooperative's purchase of Kroger's...

Re: Leesburg, VA Safeway with circle S signs

For what its worth the Leesburg, VA Safeway has been renovated with the current lifestyle format. The signage outside was replaced with the renovation. I believe the original street sign standard is in use with a new modern sign. I found it interesting that Safeway didn't replace some of the refrige...

Re: Some Central PA Pictures

Super Shoes was a Giant? Do you mean Super G/Maryland Giant? When would it have closed? Was it replaced? This store looks like a Food Fair to me, but I heard the Dollar Tree might actually have been a Food Fair. The parking lot streetlights this store has were used by Acme, A&P, and Food Fair at di...

Some Central PA Pictures

On a recent trip to see my parents I took some pictures of some of the buildings that have been discussed in a couple of the central PA threads. Original Giant-PA location in Chambersburg, PA (now Super Shoes): http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjhale/5481939459/ Possible former Acme in Chambersburg, PA ...

Re: Central PA questions

The downtown Chambersburg JCPenney was in the Southgate Shopping Mall (its a strip mall not enclosed). Southgate is located on W Washington Street of US 11 south of US 30 in downtown Chambersburg. My recollection is that it was the right-hand of the two large free standing buildings in the complex. ...

Re: Acme in the DC area

The Acme was at Lee Highway and Graham Road. Grand Union/Great Valu was Annandale Road and Arlington Blvd. Do you know if the nearby Loehmann's has closed? I wonder why the Giant-anchored center is named after that store instead. Loehmann's is bankrupt and closed their only other store remotely clo...

Former Kroger Operations in PA

I'm curious to know the former extent of Kroger's operations in PA. As has been discussed here, they operated stores in the immediate Pittsburgh area. But how far north did they go beyond Pittsburgh? I was in Grove City, PA on Saturday and noticed this store: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjhale/5364...
