Re: New York area: Waldbaums (Safeway?)
Late to the post:
The ShopRite wasn't on the Lefrak property. It was on Horace Harding on the next block east where a gas station is now. You'll get this: It was towards the bowling alley - away from Loehmann's. :)

Re: Waldbaums, Queens NY (Corrected and added Photos)
Wow, interesting post. I worked in that Waldbaums on 57th Ave. for a couple of years as a bookkeeper. I loved the Fred Flinstone facade. Of all the stores I was shuffled around to, those customers were the nicest I ever dealt with. I grew up on the other side of the expressway, surrounded by (5) Wal...

Re: New York area: Waldbaums (Safeway?)
The ONLY noticeable difference was the produce area seemed slightly updated with the feel of a Whole Foods.. That's the new "Super Associated". They were created in response to the A&P/Waldbaum "Fresh" stores. There's one in Jersey City owned by Morton Williams, nice store, ...

Re: New York area: Waldbaums (Safeway?)
My guess is if it had a round roof, it could have been a Hills. Waldbaum's bought 10 of the stores (Hills) in 1978 according to wikepedia.

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
Gallon jugs of Pink Fabric Softener were just removed from Shop Rite's product line. A gallon of softener for $1.69. Gone..... and powdered laundry detergent in rectangle boxes.

Re: Grocers in "real" malls - not strip malls
At Metro Mall in Middle Village, Queens, a Waldbaums was in a building alongside a Caldor in a shared indoor lobby. It was originally a Bohack and Robert Hall Village. It was a weird building. You parked on the roof and rode the escalator down to the stores with your cart that locked into the groove...

Re: Waldbaums, Queens NY (Corrected and added Photos)
It's confirmed by an expert (my 85year old Mom) it was a Penn Fruit.Groceteria wrote:Having visited that store today, I'm pretty convinced it was a Penn Fruit, unless maybe Waldbaum's had a similar prototype. But several former PFs I've seen had a similar perpendicular orientation to the centers they were in.

Re: Waldbaums, Queens NY (Corrected and added Photos)(Hill's)
Hills' last store was in Douglaston, Queens. In my 1979-80 phone book it's listed, but the existing Waldbaums isn't. I know Waldbaums replaced Hills b/c I worked at that store briefly in '84. (yikes)

Re: Waldbaums, Queens NY (Corrected and added Photos)
It could have been a Hills, but according my 1979 Queens phonebook, it was a Waldbaums (at least at that time). I don't know prior to that.

Another Waldbaums in the new pics from the webman's trip
The store in Fresh Meadows that's now a Korean grocer was a Waldbaums that closed in 1984. It became something else, then an Associated and is now the Korean store.
It's the store located at 196th St.

The store on Nothern & 86th closed in 1982. I remember when all the employees were switched to my store in Rego Park (99th St. & 63rd Rd. Store #41)...then I was moved to the store on Queens Blvd & Yellowstone (#90) from there I went to Lefrak City (#64). I recently bought a 1978 (yes......
