Re: Which Chicagoland supermarket suffered the most under new ownership?

Question for rvwalton: would you agree with me that the Jewel at Dixie Square Mall would have likely closed anyway even if the mall had stayed open? ... Yes, I would agree. Jewel closed the Oakbrook Center location and also closed the Randhurst location, although that one was relocated to a much la...

Re: Big Bear Chain-San Diego Area-1959

I found this post while researching Big Bear Stores of San Diego. Two points: The Sandrock location was a Henry's before it was a SavOn and later CVS. I don't know whether the SavOn/CVS is in the former Big Bear/Henry's building, but my guess is the building was built for SavOn. I never shopped at t...

Re: Which Chicagoland supermarket suffered the most under new ownership?

I was assuming Dominick's was a semi-upscale chain because Safeway has a history of buying upscale-leaning chains such as Genuardi's, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Pavilions. And since 2000, Safeway itself has seemingly tried to move upscale, especially since the Lifestyle format made its debut circa 20...

Re: Which Chicagoland supermarket suffered the most under new ownership?

Here's kind of a strange sight in the second photo on the page: http://gassigns.org/jewel.htm That vacant supermarket (with the Hollywood Video next to it, which of course has also since closed) was apparently a former Dominick's. This photo was taken in 2004. Was it particularly rare for Dominick'...

Re: Iconic Store Designs

We all know that several of the larger, more national chains had some very popular, iconic store designs. By iconic, I mean it was always immediately recognized as having been built by that chain. ...But what about other chains? From a regional standpoint is best, because I don't believe we have ha...

Re: Kroger/Chicago

Kroger sold their Chicago area distribution center to Dominick's in '70 along with two cohorts of stores---buying the distribution center probably marked their departure from the market, although Dominick's made its second purchase about 6 months after. The South Suburban stores probably were suppl...

With Dominick's in Chicago officially giving notice to employees that they intend to close all stores by December 28th Chicago Tribune posted an interesting photo pictorial of the chain through the years. http://galleries.apps.chicagotribune.com/chi-131010-dominicks-through-the-years-pictures/ The ...

Re: Was Kohl's

Nope, it was definately a Kohl's according to Chicago Tribune archives. Kohl's did have locations in Chicago. According to a 1975 advertisement. The locations were: Central and Addison Elston and Kimball (which prior to that was a supermarket called Mayflower and it is now split between a Family Do...

Re: MIA aspect of supermarkets, do you remember this ?

Our policy at Mayfair Markets was to call out prices. The reason as explained to me was that if there was a discrepancy the customer could identify it right away. It changed because of scanners for obvious reasons. Interestingly years later Safeway installed a device on our scanners that called out...

Re: The Jewel-Osco stores of Albertsons LLC

At one time they had stores in Champaign-Urbana (thanks to Eisner) but those stores are no longer part of Jewel. Not sure whether they were closed before the Supervalu acquisition or afterward. The entire Eisner portion of Jewel is gone. IIRC, Champaign lasted until 2000-2001. Danville closed in 20...

Re: The Jewel-Osco stores of Albertsons LLC

The two stores in Springfield. IL were not taken over by Supervalu. They were initially taken over by Cerberus and later sold to Niemann Foods. As far as i know, these were the only stores that did not get acquired by Supervalu. The locations in Bloomington-Normal and Kankakee remained part of Jewel...

Re: Vintage Supermarket Commercials I'd Love to See on YouTube

For those of you who hail from Chicago, here are a couple of Jewel and Dominick's commercials. The Jewel commercials feature their various jingles. The Dominick's commercials feature local TV personality Elaine Mulqueen. I love the one where she says "and for fresh squid!" "Come to Je...
