Re: Britt's Department Store

Britt's was in Manor East Mall and was practically unknown until relatively recently (thought to be always Penney's). It opened in 1970 but it was around the mid-1970s I'm told when Britt's packed up for a JCPenney to fill the spot. The building hosts Jo-Ann Fabrics and Bealls today.

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)

I remember finding out that 1710 11th Street in Huntsville, TX was originally a Kmart (later a Hastings for years, ultimately demolished for an H-E-B) but I can no longer find the reference.

Re: A&P/Eckerd Drung proposed merger, 1969

Interesting move for A&P at this time---they were in a steep decline at this time. I'm surprised any viable business would have wanted to be acquired by them. If A&P had played their cards right, they could've gotten a step up. "Super combo" stores like the joint operation between Skaggs Cos. and A...

Giant at Westfield Wheaton

The original Giant Food was part of the mall, opening before the mall circa 1957, and the building torn down when the mall renovated in the early 2000s. The replacement store opened around the time the original was torn down, did it really have an interior entrance to the mall the entire time?

Re: Weird former Kroger store in Houston

From the shape, the front entrance placement, etc., it really looks almost like a 1970s superstore that got an exterior remodeling/recladding, maybe in the 1980s. Is that a possibility? The store was built in 1978 and sold in 1998, which sounds right as that was the time when their acquired Safeway...

Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants

I was an area supervisor and can remember the deli calling me to help them make ham sandwiches. I would alway make a healthy batch and buy them at closing for almost nothing [hah blue light specials]. I remember around 8 or 830 pizza and taco snacks were a quarter. A couple of those and and icee, w...

Re: When did the Vons meat plant close?

I don't know the exact date unfortunately but it seemed like it was a year or two after the Jack in the Box incident. Important information to keep in mind about that incident. Vons only ground the meat that Jack in the Box supplied. It was never mixed with Vons own meat but they suffered a drop in...

When did the Vons meat plant close?

At one time in the early 1990s (and likely before), The Vons Cos. had a meat plant that did work for its own supermarkets (presumably) and some restaurant use (famously and infamously Jack in the Box). It was that meat plant that caused the initial trouble, and certainly hasn't existed for a long ti...

The Wikipedia article is where I found out about it, otherwise it provides no more useful information other than more than one was opened.

Tops Friendly Markets International Super Center

I was reading about the history of Tops Friendly Markets, and in 1991, the same year it was acquired by Royal Ahold, they opened a 115,000 square foot "Tops Friendly Markets International Super Center" in Amherst, NY, which sounds like the super-sized early 1990s supermarkets everyone seemed to be o...

Was "Kids' Kounty" a predecessor to Child World/Children's Palace?

Recently, I came across a rather curious defunct store in the Houston, TX area...a 1970s shopping center had a large toy store (smaller than a big box toy store but much larger than others at the time) called "Kids' Kounty". The original article says it was a product of the "Lachman Rose Company", a...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

No. 2, 3101 S. Glenstone I was surprised to find it became a Kmart (recently closed). Was Smitty's-MO that big enough to have one of its stores become a Kmart? After all, the Kmart looked a bit strange to be built by their own hand. Sadly, no. It turns out that it was a Venture and Smitty's operated...

Hillman's Pure Foods

What happened to Hillman's Pure Foods? It was a Chicagoland grocery store into the mid-1950s, with locations in a few places, including the basement of the Six Corners Sears and in Cermak Plaza. I had heard the Sears location lasted into the 1970s, and I do wonder if it was owned by Sears during tha...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

I collected these from an 1983 ad. It's possible one more was built before pull-out in I believe 1985 but it's unlikely.
