Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations

Hi there, I've been working on this spreadsheet of Kmart locations for over a year now. Combining existing store lists with information found in old newspapers, retail directories both on- and offline, and local, state and federal government databases, I've been able to pull together this list of 3...

Re: NEW: Des Moines, 1925-2020 (sort of)

4100 University Ave was a quintessential Marina store, opening in the latter half of the 1960s. It now houses a curious thing: A Hy-Vee "Drugstore," which just happens to have a food and liquor selection. I guess Hy-Vee pursued this angle for branding the location because it didn't meet t...

Re: New location list: Dubuque 1925-1990

I grew up and currently live near Dubuque and if I remember right Hy-Vee had purchased the Save-u-More and was running the Dubuque store on Asbury Road while building their first store in Dubuque at 3500 Dodge Street. Once that was up and running they closed down the Save-U-More and moved everything...

Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants

I just happened into the Kmart in Dubuque (4018) today as I needed a couple things and didn't feel like running to the nearest Hy-Vee which would be really busy this time of day. Been over a year since I was last in there. They still have a K-Cafe/Little Caesar's open in that store, although it look...

Looks like K-Mart is exiting the Cedar Rapids market

Looks like K-Mart is going to exit the Cedar Rapids market after being in the area for over four decades. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - With a planned mid-December closing date, the Kmart store at 180 Collins Rd. NE in Cedar Rapids launched its inventory liquidation sale on Monday. Sears Holdings, owner of K...

Re: Early 90s-build Kmarts with auto centers?

It really wasn't unusual for this era of Kmarts to have the Auto Centers: All of the Super Kmart Center stores I saw had them, and all of them were built in the early to mid 90's. Some, but not all of the 90's stores had them. Where Walmart builds them in all but the smallest locations, Kmart was m...

Old Eagle's store converted into a data center.

The old Eagle's in Bettendorf, Iowa had been sitting vacant since 2004 when the parent company went belly up. Geneseo Communications came along last year and turned the former store into a data center. I thought that was a neat use for a former grocery store.

Re: Dairy Queen Through the Years

In Dubuque there's an old walk up Dairy Queen that is only open during the warmer months and closes every winter. Maybe one of these days I'll get a picture of it. I don't think off hand it was the barn style. We also had a Dairy Queen that closed last winter for several months so they could do an e...

Re: Largest Walgreens store I've seen

The first Dubuque Walgreens store was up at Kennedy Mall, where Dick's Sporting Goods is located now. About ten years ago they built a new store about 1/4 mile away on JFK Road and closed down the mall store. As I recall at the time Walgreens gave the explanation that they wanted to get away from th...

Re: JCPenney mall locations

Kennedy Mall in Dubuque originally had Younkers, Roshek's, and Montgomery Ward as their anchor tenants. JC Penney was originally downtown on Main Street next to the American Trust Building. In the early 80s Roshek's was closed and replaced with Armstrong's Department Store. Montgomery Ward pulled ou...

Re: Target '90s neon

I think the Dubuque store had it for a while - they had been remodeled for the first time since opening back in the early 90s. They underwent some further remodeling a couple years ago which entailed the reconstruction of the front of the store. The neon was gone then. There was even more remodeling...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

A lot of times people would rather stick with what works than going on to the latest and greatest. Especially when the latest and greatest isn't proven while an older system is tried and true. The IT guy in me is going to weigh in here. That's always the case. Especially in smaller businesses, the ...

Re: Waukegan, IL mystery grocery store

National had divisions based in the Quad Cities and Sioux City. They would be the likeliest candidate to have had stores in Waukegan and Dubuque that would look alike. They departed Iowa in the mid-70s. Yep, turns out this was a former National. http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z259/47of74/nationa...

Warehouse Market

Here in Dubuque we used to have a grocery store called Warehouse Market. My mom, grandma, and her sisters used to shop there a lot. The highlight for me was the big wooden flatbed carts. For mom and the adults it was probably the wax pencil to mark the price on your their own groceries. The store cl...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

If I had to guess, I'd say they probably require things beyond simple POS functionality here, like parts lookup databases and detailed invoicing integrated in the system beyond the regular POS transactions, so it's probably a lot less of a hassle to stick to the old system than to try to integrate ...
