Re: Smith's in El Paso

Not surprising that the Smith stores were sold. They were a long ways from a distribution center and were an island. When the merger happened a few problems popped up with the El Paso stores and some of their back office operations had to be moved to Houston with operational control being handled by...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Kroger has been numbering stores for a very long time. Within the company the store is prefaced with the division code or division letter(s). Houston is division 034, and the letter code is: HP. So store #995 would be known within the company as 034-995 or HP-995. There more than likely is more than...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

The Family Center in Victoria had been around for a long time. It was probably built in the late 60's or early 70's. The Victoria store sale was one of the stores included along with all the stores in the Valley and Corpus to Furr's in the mid 80's.

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

The Lafayette stores were closed along with all the stores in Baton Rouge area (excluding Lake Charles, Alex and Shreveport area) stores in a contract dispute in the early 80's. The Lafayette and Baton Rouge stores were part of the Houston Division. In the 80's Houston and Dallas were separate marke...

Re: Plank Road Grocery Stores

The 6 boxes on the roofs were actually air intakes. The compressor and condensers were all located in the engine room. The circles were exhaust fans that were controlled by thermostats. Some of the stores a/c condensers were located on the roof near the engine room as the huge a/c unit was next to t...

Re: Was this an old Kroger, or what? (Conroe, TX)

It was not an old Kroger store. Randall's had a store in this center before moving to South and eventually closing it. The Family Center opened in 1972 and was across the freeway - now currently a Hobby Lobby. Most Greenhouse stores had one big A/C unit located in the rear of the store with a smalle...

Re: Albertsons in Houston

Kroger Houston did not have Starbucks in their stores until they purchased the Albertson's stores.

Albertson's was in Conroe in the late 80's with a single store on South Loop 336.

Re: Old Albertsons store brands

One of the reasons why (I think) Albertsons bought Safeway was to gain access to their store brands, since SuperValu had killed most of the brands and kept others (like Wild Harvest). If it was a reason to me it would be at the bottom. When Albertson's split I don't know which company (Celebrus or ...

This was #292. Opened in the early 80's and closed when Kroger left San Antonio in the 90's.

Re: Frankenstein Kroger-SupeRx (Chillicothe, IL)

That is one ugly remodel. Kroger build two stores in Houston in 1993 that were new construction of a corporate design that had two upstairs rooms and large windows. It looks like this remodel tried to mimic that design but did a horrible job. The actual new construction were pretty nice looking stor...

Re: Possible ex-Kroger

The location is wrong as the small Greenhouse is not in Katy, it is on 1960 and Jones Road. But the replacement time frame would be right, about 1985 for the new store on North Jones Road, which has also since been replaced.

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Just to update the numbering system, it seems like some of the Marketplace stores are using numbers in the 0 to 99 range in the Southwest Division.

Re: Possible ex-Kroger

That store may have opened in 1983, that would be about the right time and style for the smaller greenhouse. It was not relocated in 1993 as there were no new stores built in Houston from about 1988 to 1992, and I worked at it's replacement store in the early 90's and it was not a brand new store at...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

Hi Explorersea; When I started in the mid 80's the division I was in was 100% scanners, and there were no old back up mechanical registers in the store. Just before Y2K the decision was made to bring all divisions to one system (IBM) and scrap all the other systems that were in place. I would imagin...
