Re: odd sighting on Google Maps - Giant store directory outd

BillyGr - could have been a garage, but looks more like a 1950's market - especially when seen using Google Earth View. Seems like the entire front of the building was expanded by about 12 feet, thus having a new façade. Here are some photos I found online. The red hanging department signs are defin...

odd sighting on Google Maps - Giant store directory outdoors

What an odd finding while I was browsing Google Maps. This is the side view of the loading dock belonging to a supermarket in Baltimore, MD. The store currently operates as Hilton Supermarket at 20 South Hilton Street. Anyone know what this store started out as? I'm certain it wasn't a Giant. The Gi...

Re: 1960's era Giant in Alexandria,VA to close -only 16,000s

Great job with the photos! I'm pretty sure this store once had a mini seafood and mini meat department. It was along the back wall, now covered by freezer cases. Most of the cheese grater stores were very similar. A twin to it was at Fairfax Circle where the Staples is. That was one of the few 'lemo...

Re: Kroger in Washington DC

Hi. No, the Kroger was across the street in Loehmanns Plaza at the site where Giant built their new store. It did convert to a Consumers Co-Op but the building wasn't recognizable in later years before it was demolished. I forget who the last tenant was but I think it was a clothing store. I've hear...

1960's era Giant in Alexandria,VA to close -only 16,000sq ft

http://delraycitizens.org/2014/03/06/grocery-store-being-considered-for-giant-site/ One of the last (if not the last) 1960's era Giant stores is going to close. It is a must visit store if you are in the area. At only 16,000sq feet it might be the smallest Giant that is still in operation. In the m...

SAFEWAY - URGENT CHANCE TO SAVE A PIECE OF HISTORY - NO TIME

THIS IS A ONE TIME CHANCE TO OWN / SAVE A PIECE OF SAFEWAY GROCERY HISTORY, Attention all preservationists / helpers / interested people in the DC area --- I just found out yesterday and took photos today of a completely preserved Safeway that was hidden in Maryland, built in 1968. ALL OF THE INTER...

There were several other locations in the DC area, not previously mentioned - 1) Alexandria, VA (Beacon Mall anchor) 2) Forestville, MD (shopping center, anchor with A&P / Dart Home 3) Clinton, MD (freestanding building). I was at the grand opening of the Clinton, MD Woolco. It was around Fall 1...

Washington DC Safeway vs. NYC Safeway

One photo is a 1950's Safeway that was in DC. The other appears to be a former Safeway in Brooklyn, NY. Both appear to be inner-city locations with limited space and the loading door is on the left. I've seen other locations like this in DC. Can anyone confirm the dates Safeway was in NYC and if thi...

Hi David. Yes, my edition of the book is dated 1956. I didn't realize you already captured some of the images until I went to your Von's section to learn more about the chain. I wonder if there is much difference in the 1950 vs. 1956 version of the book. I also highly recommend it. Gary

Here are some photos I scanned to share. What is on this site now? This might be a dumb question, but, did the windmill portion of the sign actually ever spin? http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/dcgrocery/Misc/?action=view&current=vons.jpg http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/dcgrocery/Mis...

What store was this? Looks like old Safeway

Anybody know what this store is / was? This is a recent magazine ad for the Kia Sedona. I scanned it and cropped to show only the photo. My guess is that this is a former Safeway. Any guesses as to location, most recent operation, etc? http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/dcgrocery/Misc/?action=vi...

Safeway marina in Maryland to close

One of the few remaining Safeway marina stores at 3838 Howard Ave in Kensington, MD is scheduled to close in the next few days. This is one of the last, so catch it while you can! Gary

York, PA - where was this?

This is a scan of a postcard from 1962 titled York County Shopping Center. I'm guessing this refers to York, PA. If you enlarge the photo you can see a Acme on one end. A W.T. Grant and what looks to be a Food Fair on the far right. This looks like a decent sized center, and I don't remember seeing ...

Dave, thanks for the info. It was just what I was looking for. The JC Penney fooled me because of the awning that was added. We had atleast 2 of those late 1950's JC Penneys here - Eastover Shopping Center and Penn Mar Shopping Center, both in MD. Interestingly, both of those centers had both a Gran...
