Re: Dairy Queen Through the Years

The DQ in Turlock closed a couple years ago. Its now a small Mexican restaurant that gets little business. The quality had nosedived over the years. Once a Sonic moved next to it, I knew it would never survive that. DQ in the 90s was great. In Missouri if you ordered a large shake, they gave you a 3...

Re:

I was an area supervisor and can remember the deli calling me to help them make ham sandwiches. I would alway make a healthy batch and buy them at closing for almost nothing [hah blue light specials]. I remember around 8 or 830 pizza and taco snacks were a quarter. A couple of those and and icee, w...

Re: McDonald's Express

While McDonalds may still lead the pack, they're coasting on their name at this point. A mere shell of their former quality. Have any of you guys seen how their burgers are made now? I have a young cousin who worked there a few months ago. It's all kept in drawers and they put the burgers together l...

Re: NorCal Albertsons/PayLess combos

Turlock had an Albertsons/Payless in the 80s. When the Albertsons went under in the early 00s it almost killed the entire shopping center. Almost half the stores went under. A 99 cent store opened there a few years ago but the area never fully recovered.

Re: Alpha Beta- Modesto

I had no idea until now that we had 2 Alpha Betas here. Gonna ask my mom about this one. Only one I remember is the Alpha Beta located in the middle of the west side slums.

Re: Modesto, CA former Lucky (?)

The Modesto Lucky on Dale/Standiford is my all time fave grocery store. We went there several times a week. It was next to a Long's Drug store. While Save Mart may have acquired the building in 97, they had stopped being Luckys long before that.

Re: PAK'N SAVE FOODS

The Pak N Save in Modesto in 1984 must have been an anamoly. It was a 'regular' grocery store, not like those described. Is it possible it was meant to be a Vons/Safeway but was given the Pak name instead? It lasted about 2 years but one opened in 91.

Re: old store brands

Anyone know the story behind the yellow generic brand of the 70s-80s? Obviously these items were name brand products disguised as generic, best example being the bags of cookies being Grandma's cookies but I was curious who actually ran the operation.

Re: The first Chuck E. Cheese's in San Jose, California

Modesto, CA has had one since 80-81. Not surprised reading about the change in ownership. Went there often in the early-mid 80s & it had an incredible atmosphere. Went again around 87-88 & it was a buzzkill, doom & gloom vibe.

Re: skippers

Tragic what happened to this franchise. All over CA in the 80s, then gone like a thief in the night. My aunt still complains about it to this day. Would love for someone to do a documentary about Skippers someday. Would be very interesting

Re: Older KFC Locations

Also remember the buffets in MO back in 93-94. Menu was expanded during this era as they had zucchini & other non menu items. Delicious & cheap but like others said, fast food chains not really capable of maintaining a buffet for obvious reasons.

Re: Older KFC Locations

Speaking of old KFCs, in Turlock in1980 there was a KFC between 2 houses in a residential neighborhood! Bizarre & god only knows how they got a permit for it or why they thought it was a good idea. Dad laughed when we went there, and rightfully so.

Re: Happy Steak

They were in Modesto & Turlock in the 80s. IMO, the concept(fast food steakhouse) was simply too ahead of its time to maintain a huge customer base. Their steak, spud, & cheese toast was amazing. Deserved much more success than they got.

I always wanted to eat there, but didn't get the chance. I lived in Modesto in 1995, and days before I moved to Missouri, they had a grand opening. Each time I drove by there, there was a line out the door. I decided against going, and figured I would eat there the next time I came back. Moved back ...
