Re: Late 70s A&P store video

they clearly went through the express lane which in those days was almost always collocated with the office...seemed more like a retinue/cast of thousands than the normal for a suburban grocery store

Re: Late 70s A&P store video

Chicago--perhaps Matteson or other south suburb, I'd guess. Store dated from 1974 or so when Venture came into Chicago from St. Louis--they didn't partner in St. Louis with A&P (worked with Schnucks to put in Venture Foods) but this was A&P's last gasp for some real estate in Chicago suburban areas ...

Re: List of Detroit-area A&P stores from 1983

Great stuff! Summer of '84 and '85 I worked for a rack jobber while in college (garden seeds) and would drive a van around inventorying and removing the garden seed racks from stores. I was assigned to Farmer Jack and Franks Nursery and Crafts, although a colleague handled the A&P stores. A couple c...

A&P stores in Maine in 1990s

Were there any A&P stores left in Maine in the 1990s? I spent a couple weeks in Bangor for work, and the off weekend took a drive out to New Brunswick, and vaguely recall one east of there which was a very ramshackle looking building (didn't seem to be a Centennial--was more like a general store whi...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

Thank you for the data. I went to a Safeway/Food Barn in Jefferson City in 1978 or 1979 on a class trip. I wondered if Safeway came as far east as Fulton, but from what you're saying, Columbia/Jefferson City was it. I believe that Columbia also had a deposit law on soft drinks, which also made life ...

Re: List of Missouri and Illinois Kroger stores from 1979

That's correct. That was the K-SO. About a mile south on Old Des Peres Road is an osteopathic hospital, so this is a reasonable location for a orthopedic practice/store. They have changed the traffic flow so dramatically in that area that it's tough for those like me who have moved away to get aroun...

Re: List of Missouri and Illinois Kroger stores from 1979

Big Bend/141 was new build Sav-On; the flagship National was a couple miles north at Manchester/141. The neighborhood there to the south was Valley Park (flood zone, not affluent)but there was a good bit of new residential going in in the area. Clayton/Clarkston--affluent suburbia. Affton was new-bu...

Re: List of Missouri and Illinois Kroger stores from 1979

Lots here to digest. This was nowhere near an exhaustive list of St. Louis Kroger stores; and is not exhaustive for Southern Illinois, either. The Missouri-side stores listed here were Kroger Sav-On units (definitely Des Peres/Twin Oaks/Affton/Arnold). Others in metro STL were big superstores (altho...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

No first-hand knowledge, but Springfield was definitely in the middle of several Safeway divisions (Tulsa, Little Rock and Kansas City) so likely had some stores there. Apparently the "thing" in Springfield was Smitty's (which was a food/drug hypermarket similar to Smitty's in Phoenix) during the la...

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s

A&P left St. Louis in approximately 1978, but stayed in Kansas City until the early 80s. Competition in St. Louis was far more robust than in Kansas City; with Schnucks and National being 1 and 2 in St. Louis with generally modern stores (National had some Loblaw's influences in the mid 70s with som...
