Re: The Pantry - Southern CA
The Pantry Supermarkets were based out of Pasadena, their HQ was on W Del Mar Blvd and most of their stores were in the San Gabriel Valley. They were our family, neighbors and friends favorite market in the 60s and 70s til the small chain sold out to a larger corporation and down the tubes went the...

Re: Hughes La Habra
Hughes bought El Rancho in 1979. The El Rancho locations were in Arcadia, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Irvine, Laguna Hills, and an area of Newport Beach called Eastbluff. All of the stores except South Pas (Big Lots), Laguna Hills (Big Lots) Newport Beach (empty lot?)...

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
That list is definitely out of date; I don't think any Albertsons exist from the Shopping Bag days anymore. The Sierra Madre store closed a few years ago, there's only one picture of the inside from Yelp, and it looks like an ancient store that wasn't touched since before the blue-and-gray era. Yes...

Re: Food Fair in Southern California
Great! Thank you for the information. Since the logo was so different, I thought the Wiki page was another store by the same name. Sounds like they became unmanageable and overly spread. Wish I had a picture of one which was in So. Calif.

Re: Vons on La Tijera Blvd
Interesting history. I worked on La Cienega, not far from this store from 1986 - 1992. This was a classic, old-school store.

Re: The Lost And Forgotten Supermarkets Of LA's Past
I remember the Alhambra Alpha Beta had an Alphy's Restaurant next to it. I believe it was run by whoever was running Alpha Beta at the time.

Food Fair in Southern California
Does anyone recall this chain? Think they became defunct around 1973. The signage in them was classic. I used to draw pictures of the store in San Gabriel on Las Tunas Drive. Some of the signage decor included: "You can't buy better, so why pay more?" "Only the price is lowered, never...

Re: Re:
Did Hughes operate El Rancho as a banner or did they become Hughes? I remember the Pasadena store having a sign that said "Hughes El Rancho". Hughes rebuilt the Arcadia Store and the sign read "Hughes El Rancho." Ralphs later added on to the rebuilt store. I believe the store in...

Re: Vons Pantry Stores
I believe the smaller Pavilions locations were originally called "Pavilions Place." The Pantry pictured is on California Blvd, just west of Lake Ave in Pasadena. It is not a very large store and as mentioned, was originally a "Place". Also, Panty's offices were located in Pasaden...
