Re: Could this be a former Safeway Marina in Richmond, VA?

Oh, and yes, Food Fair was pretty big in Richmond at one time, coming to town around 1960. It's one of the stores I remember most going to as a kid. But, since we here in Richmond like to screw up all of the conventional wisdom regarding how chains disappeared, after the name change to Pantry Pride,...

Re: Could this be a former Safeway Marina in Richmond, VA?

No, it was part of a local chain, Siegel's Supermarkets. It opened in 1959 and, after it was Siegel's, became a Community Pride. It's now owned by a church. Never, ever anything else. It's a common mistake. There is, however, a pretty good Marina down the street and around the corner a bit, at Jeffe...

Re: History of Safeway in King George, VA

Hi, It is funny how people in the grocery business get around. I worked with a non foods manager that worked in that Safeway. 15 Years latter she could not get over that they closed that store.... The store did a million dollars per week in season when it was closed. Yes it was part of the Richmond...

Re: History of Safeway in King George, VA

... It was during this consolidation that they closed King George along with the remaining valley stores, Tidewater, and what we called "country stores (West Point, Glen Allen, Kilmarnock, etc.)... Ironic that Glen Allen would have been considered a "country" store, considering what Glen Allen is t...

Re: History of Safeway in King George, VA

I don't recall if the store in King George was still being operated by Safeway when the Richmond locations were sold, or even when the Richmond Division was consolidated into Washington, but Safeway pulled out of Richmond on December 12, 1993. The only Safeway on my list on Patterson Avenue in Richm...

David, this blog has a picture of the orginial retail center at Tyson's Corner. You probably don't remember it this way. I don't either.

FYI, this store is now closed. The tree in the pylon survives; though it was cut down a couple of years ago, it's back.

Re: Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia

Rich, Elkins is a pretty large town for the area, which explains the fair amount of retail there - also there's not much of anything besides small independent stores for miles and miles once you head east or south from Elkins. On the route I travel, there are no "real" supermarkets for over 100 mile...

Re: Mystery Safeway interior decor - Richmond, VA

I was working for Safeway in the old Richmond Division when this store opened in 1979. It originally had the more traditional 1970s decor mentioned in another post in this stream. It may have been remodeled but I don't think so, I believe this store may have operated as The Grocery Store (a Farm Fr...

That Clarksburg "Superstore" is where my mother-in-law shops. It's extremely small. How big were "Superstores" supposed to be?

Re: Marina Safeways in Richmond - Any Left?

There's an old marina Safeway in Mechanicsville, a few miles east of Richmond. It's at the intersection of Atlee Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike in "downtown" Mechanicsville, in the Mechanicsville Shopping Center. It apparently was expanded somewhat at one point. The aerial view here reveals the m...

Re: Circuit City

Since Circuit City is headquartered here, I've gotten to know a lot of CC people over the years - in fact, my wife worked fror Circuit City at one time. My family's experience with them goes all the way back to the Wards TV days. Circuit City still owns or leases/subleases a lot of property, includi...

Re: 15 S. Adams Street, Petersburg, VA

Petersburg is considered to be in the Richmond area sometimes and in Southside Virginia at other times - that said, there are a smattering of IGAs east and south of Petersburg so it could be supplied by IGA, though I don't think that IGA would be too happy about the condition of the signage. From wh...
