Re: Calif. Mtn. Safeway Location?
It might be a location that was redeveloped to the point where it's unrecognizable today. That wouldn't be uncommon for LA. There was a Lucky in Burbank down the street from the old NBC studios that was torn down and redeveloped into entertainment company high rises decades ago. You'd never know the...

Re: Calif. Mtn. Safeway Location?
Thinking Idaho Springs, CO may be it... tough as there is now an Interstate highway behind the store. Terrain likely modified. Yet another non-Lifestyle store in Denver Division... (recently given a cheap remodel to the Florida decor). I looked at Idaho Springs. It looks right, except the portion o...

Re: Calif. Mtn. Safeway Location?
Are we absolutely sure this location was in California? There don't seem to be any areas in California that have the right terrain with a grocery building with a dock on the left front side. The Jensen's in Wrightwood has a left front dock, but was never a Safeway, and looks more gabled. I even wond...

Re: Calif. Mtn. Safeway Location?
I found the master list storewanderer was referring to. The links to the map no longer work, so we can't see the individual LA, Bay Area, San Diego or Sacramento locations, but the thread lists the rest. No store in Lake Arrowhead or Mt. Baldy but apparently there were stores in both Big Bear City a...

Re: Calif. Mtn. Safeway Location?
Initially I thought it was Frazier Park, but the old Safeway that was there doesn't look like that. It is an old A-Frame type store that is now a hardware store. It could be Lake Arrowhead, as the Stater Bros there now (while the facade is different) is laid out similarly with the loading dock on t...

Sav-On Drugs in the Bay Area 1970s
Over on Retailwatchers there is discussion on some Rite Aids closing; one is a former Payless in San Jose that started out as a Sav-On during their attempted expansion into Northern California in the 1970s. How many of these were there? I remember seeing a sign for one on or near the San Francisco/D...

Re: Walgreen Agency?
Not to say that there weren't "agency" stores on the west coast (there probably were)but Walgreens actually had "regular" stores in San Francisco in the 1940s and a pretty big presence in Northern California at least by the 1960s. They had 5 stores in SF in 1962 and 11 by 1978. ...
