Re: Mystery store, Palace Mall, Mitchell SD

It is unusual to see a Sears right next door to a JC Penney in the same shopping center. It could have been a former food store, although I'm not that familiar with what chains had locations in South Dakota. Looking closer at the photo, it appears that the Sears was a hardware store occupying a sing...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Not sure, but I thought the 1978 movie Animal House took place in Southern California. Part of it takes place in a local supermarket. The supermarket in "Animal House" was called "Food King". I remember reading a Portland, OR newspaper at the Cleveland main library's newspaper r...

Re: GEM Discount Stores Toronto, Canada

I remember GEM and Fame. My grandfather once worked for Hawthornden State Hospital (now North Coast Behavioral Healthcare). As a State Of Ohio employee, my grandfather and his family (including my mother and grandmother) had membership privileges for GEM and Fame. I remember that Fame was destroyed ...

I am guessing "Farmers Superstore". I also liked the detail in that old picture, especially the "Old Dutch Cleanser" woman below the signs in the window.

Re: Waukegan, IL mystery grocery store

I am guessing National, since the front of this store, which appears to be brick surrounded by concrete (for signage), looks similar to the 1950's photograph of a National store in Minnesota.

Re: Former supermarket, Elyria, Ohio

Last time I was in Elyria, the former superstore Kroger on Abbe Road is now a Save A Lot. I would like to guess that the supermarket where the Discount Drug Mart and Goodwill are could be either Meyer Goldberg (a Lorain County grocery chain that went out of business in the late 1970's) or an indepen...

Re: Store Brands -- Why?

As for Eight O'Clock Coffee, I believe A&P set up Compass Foods mainly to make the coffee brand available in markets where A&P pulled out of in the 1970's and 1980's. Eight O'Clock Coffee did have a loyal following, so it is only natural that competing grocery chains started selling the prod...

Re: A&P "A" Mart.

You are correct. There was a Revco adjacent to the A&P, which became a CVS and lasted until they moved across the street. Giant Eagle then expanded into the Revco/CVS space. A&P had built three of these stores in Cleveland that I know of, the Bedford one, one on Brookpark and Ridge Roads in ...

Re: Bloomfield Shur Save (Pittsburgh): Former Kroger?

The inside windows with the green looks a lot like a 1960's pre-superstore Kroger design. It got the superstore facade in the 1970's. Also, this store has barricades in front that prevents the shopping carts from entering the parking lot (or being stolen), which makes me think this store is in a dec...

Re: A&P "A" Mart.

I recall an "A-Mart" A&P at Southgate Shopping Center. It eventually became a regular A&P again after the "WEO" concept rolled out. I seem to recall that Atlantic Richfield (Arco), and later Sunoco, had convenience stores that used the "A-Mart" name, but Arco la...

Re: Former supermarket, Elyria, Ohio

I am guessing that the JC Penney store at Ridgeview closed when they opened at Midway Mall, which is not far from there. I remember the twin cinema...I went to see "Top Gun" there in 1986...it was a discount-price operation. The theater also sold flavored popcorn. I stopped at the antique ...

Re: Former supermarket, Elyria, Ohio

Thanks for the clarifications. I think both Big Lots and Save A Lot took over that same Kroger building (correct me if I'm wrong...I think Big Lots is in the front and Save A Lot is in the rear. I remember an Edwards Food Warehouse store (part of Pick-N-Pay/Finast; their answer to Kroger's Barney's ...

Re: Sandusky (OH) Mall History

Tiffin Mall indeed has JCPenney. Kmart was demolished for a theater (the old theaters are still empty). Even though Aaron Rental took up 1/4 of the mall, there's still precious little else in it. Yet somehow there's an Osterman, which usually only goes into mid-size malls. Tiffin has room for maybe...
