Mayfair Broadmoor

That was the view heading north. The driveway entrance is actually on Garden Gateway, Junipero Serra would be off to the right of the photo.

The Alec store on Hill St. in Colma was never a Gemco. Alec closed in the mid 70's and was vacant for several years before Pak N Save opened.

There's also the asian Kukjae Market at 2350 Junipero Serra Blvd in Daly City that was a Mayfair at least as far back as the early 1960s. I was given the impression (I can't remember by whom) that the Daly City store also operated as a Safeway very briefly. It would make sense, I guess, since Brent...

Re: The Akron

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but weren't there Akrons in the Bay Area as well? I seem to recall one in the Fishermen's Wharf area -- maybe at the North Point shopping center? And also in San Jose. Anyone? You are correct! There was an Akron in the NorthPointe Shopping Center along with a Mayfair and ...

Immediately after this location closed as a Safeway in the early 80's became a "Food Barn". Pops and I would stop there before going to watch the Giants at the Stick.

Binky says that this was once a Max's. He doesn't recall it being an A&P, however, the sign shape certain suggests otherwise.

Binky tells me this was a Cardinal Foods. I'm surprised there are no photos of the Colonial A&P Sheet Music Store on Mound.

Corti had a market in the Arden Fair Mall adjacent to a 60's era "Food Circus" and a T-Drugs. I believe the entire building was demolished and a Max's Opera Cafe and movie theatre occupy the area that housed the above businesses.

Newport Blvd. Stater Bros.

I don't know when the Stater Bros. at 2180 Newport Blvd. Costa Mesa opened, however, it appears to be a 1960's vintage with neon and terrazzo floors. The store recently did a partial remodel.
