Re: Kohl's Supermarkets in the Chicago Area

http://groceteria.com/forboard/lincolnwood.jpg 7175 N. Lincoln Ave., Lincolnwood IL This one's pretty beautiful, methinks. I vaguely remember seeing a photo of a similarly-style Jewel at some point, but I'm not 100% certain. Could just be a very nice independent or some other chain. Ideas welcome. ...

Re: Was Kohl's

Nope, it was definately a Kohl's according to Chicago Tribune archives. Kohl's did have locations in Chicago. According to a 1975 advertisement. The locations were: Central and Addison Elston and Kimball (which prior to that was a supermarket called Mayflower and it is now split between a Family Do...

Re: 239 N Genesee St, Waukegan, IL

I have access to historical archives of the local Chicago Tribune which is a great resource for old advertisements. A 1961 ad shows that the address which I believe is 239 N Genesee St, Waukegan has always been an Ace Hardware.

Re: Long John Silver's freestanding stores

Recently been driving past one at 123 Harlem Ave in Forest Park, IL, similar in 70s style to the one I had posted about in Lincolwood. A look at the website says that the only other freestanding LJS store in the Chicago area aside from Forest Park and Lincolnwood is in Countryside,

Re: Farmer's Market Chicago.

I think that if you look closely and put the Google shot side by side with the photo linked from Flick R you can see the dome part with the vent hanging on top. Also, this Tony's is close to wear I live so I have shopped here for years and my husband long before I came along. Despite the huge shot o...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Ple

Jeff, Imdb the says the movie was filmed in New Jersey, but alas it could have been filmed elsewhere or not entirely in New Jersey. I am not sure. The only Stop and Shops I am familiar with are the ones where I grew up in Ohio going to one located in suburban Cleveland. I think the Ohio Stop and Sho...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Ple

There is a very low budget late 1970s movie with Joe Pesci called The Death Collector/Family Enforcer (my husband had a dvd that had two alternate titles after looking this up imdb) and in the movie there is a scene outside an East Coast Stop and Shop (This was filmed in New Jersey) as well as a str...

About four or five years ago a friend had Tussy brand deodorent she bought from a low end local dollar store. I have not seen Tussy branded products or cosmetics anywhere. I know they once had a long history in that department making all types of makeup, perfume and other tioletries that were sold a...

Re: Farmer's Market Chicago.

I have seen this picture before. The building where this supermarket was housed is still a supermarket and has been a Tony's at 4137 N Elston. When the building was a Farmer's Market Supermarket, they also had a location right across the street selling plants, flowers, etc. That is actually still th...

Defunct Video Store Chains?

Looks like Blockbuster is not doing well at all according to this article http://www.cinematical.com/2010/03/03/blockbuster-loses-close-to-half-a-billion-in-one-quarter/ I know Hollywood Video has fallen by the wayside and with competition such as Red Box and Netflix being more and more commonplace,...
