Re: GEM Discount Stores Toronto, Canada

GEM operated one store in Cleveland for a short time in the mid '60's, on Miles Road in Warrensville Heights. I think that people who were union members were also permitted to join, because my dad was invited. (He never did join.) The store did not last very long, maybe 3-4 years. It then became a V...

Re: A&P "A" Mart.

You are correct. There was a Revco adjacent to the A&P, which became a CVS and lasted until they moved across the street. Giant Eagle then expanded into the Revco/CVS space. A&P had built three of these stores in Cleveland that I know of, the Bedford one, one on Brookpark and Ridge Roads in ...

Re: Former supermarket, Elyria, Ohio

The dime store at Ridgeview was G.C. Murphy. They also had a store in Kamms Plaza (Lorain Ave. and Rocky River Drive) in Cleveland. These are the only Murphy's in the Cleveland area that I know of.

Re: A&P "A" Mart.

The A&P was on the Libby/Warrensville Center side, behind the May Co., at the very end of the L-shaped strip. It is currently a Murray's Auto Parts. This was one of the nicer A&P's at the time, and lasted nearly to the end of their Cleveland operations. A&P had built a new store nearby a...

Re: Cleveland, OH: What was this abandoned store??

This was originally an Uncle Bill's (Cook United discount operation.) I believe it was a Kmart for awhile after Cook United went out of business.

Re: Lakewood Hgts Blvd, Cleveland, OH

As far back as I can remember, this store was Rego's Stop-n-Shop. I believe this was Rego's first store, so maybe it was built as a Rego's. BTW, I have shopped a few times at the Rego's in Kamm's plaza and it gives you a comfortable feeling like you are in the old Stop-n-Shop.

I heard that Giant Eagle could not come to terms with the landlord at Meadowbrook...no doubt Southgate gave them a good deal to stay there. I had a feeling that this was going to happen since there was no activity at the Meadowbrook store and the "Giant Eagle coming soon" sign was removed ...

Grants also had a store in Chardon and one in Medina for sure. I believe they also had a store in Biddulph Plaza in Brooklyn which subsequently became a Silverman's (small local discount store chain which actually had more of the feel of a hardware store -- lots of interesting household items you co...

The man with the bow tie is the late Congressman Charlie Vanik, who represented eastern Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) and probably parts of Lake and Geauga Counties for many years. The floor tiles and aisle markers say A&P to me, but the uniform on the cashier does not have any A&P color schem...

This was definitely an Uncle Bill's/Pick-n-Pay combo. I believe it was the second one, the first one being the aforementioned one on Broadway and Aetna Road in Cleveland. The Broadway store became a Kmart after Cook United folded and remained a Kmart until 2002 when it closed at the time of the bank...

I lived near, but not in this area from 1966-69. At that time, the end of the building in the picture was a Goodyear store. The plaza is L-shaped, the Fisher's was on the opposite end facing East 93rd. I was in this Fisher's once with my dad when we went for a walk but we were almost exclusively Pic...

The Giant Eagle in Lakewood opened 6 days after Tops closed. Giant Eagle was in a smaller store across the street that I believe started out life as a Kroger, then became Stop-n-Shop after Kroger left Cleveland. I understand that the Lakewood Tops was the Cadillac of the west side Tops stores. The K...

This store was either an A&P or a Fisher Foods as they both operated stores on this part of Euclid, I cannot remember which for sure. The Pick-n-Pay was farther east on Euclid, with an address in the 90's. I am leaning toward Fisher Foods, with Eagle taking over when Fisher's left. Eagle was a c...
