Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
Giant sold Finast-brand products because Ahold had acquired Finast, which had stores in New England (which were merged into Stop N Shop) and Cleveland (which were merged into Tops). Finast became commonplace through the 90's at all Ahold stores. When the Finast name was retired on all stores by the ...

Re: Some Central PA Pictures
I'm pretty sure you have them reversed. The Dollar Tree was the old Giant, the Super Shoes the old Food Fair. I've seen old pictures of the Chambersburg Giant, it didn't have a pylon. There's a lot of errors in this: Also, the "Sunnyway" Great Valu on the other end of Chambersburg was some...

Re: Chambersburg PA Stores
As an update on a recent visit to Chambersburg, the Super Shoes was the Food Fair and the Dollar Tree was the Giant. Seeing these stores again made it very obvious. And Nichols probably opened in the early 70's, they went out of business in 1990. The Nichols is being overhauled for Pennsylvania's fi...

Re: Safeway/AppleTree ghost stores
Because of sales. A store that's smaller and older may not be able to be expanded, but still has a strong set of customers. Moving to another location may lose those customers. And the fact that the store is older and smaller means it's more profitable usually, considering that there's less overhead...

Re: Safeway/AppleTree ghost stores
Doesn't take a genius to figure out why they're empty now. They're small and dated sites. No supermarket chain is going to want them, especially not Kroger and HEB, who have pretty much taken over the market with Wal-Mart. A lot of them are likely in areas with demographic shifts, a lot more Hispani...

Re: Safeway/AppleTree ghost stores
Non-competition clauses were quite common back in the day. They were usually negotiated with supermarkets to not operate pharmacies, as well as for discounters to not operate food centers. In Western MD, the Acme at Braddock Square/Searstown held food rights and the Thrift next door held pharmacy ri...

Re: Safeway/AppleTree ghost stores
Safeway never had a drug store partner to my knowledge the way a lot of chains did through the years. And outside of Texas, Eckerd and Safeway wouldn't have had any overlapping territory. Neither would Thrift Drug back in the day. The only "partnership" you could consider with them would b...

This is incredibly off topic, but the PA stations went to Lukoil, the MD and VA stations went to Sunoco.

The font on those green overhangs near the doors screams Safeway to me.

Re: A&P "A" Mart.
The Giant Eagle at Warren & Edgecliff doesn't have the A&P overhang of the 70's. I'd say it most likely was a Stop N Shop.

Re: Safeway, Charlottesville, 1972
Charlottesville had a Safeway at the Barracks Road Shopping Center which was one of the newer units there. It probably opened in the 70's. Closed in the 1985 dwindling of the Mid-Atlantic region. Kroger took that Safeway, and still operates in there now. If I remember correctly, it was remodeled jus...

Re: A&P "A" Mart.
Would the one in North Olmsted be the older shopping center far down Lorain Rd. where the Advance Auto Parts is now? There's a freestanding Rite Aid across from that one.
And the Brookpark/Ridge intersection would indeed be Brooklyn, not Cleveland.
