Re: Centennial A&P locations

The end of the Centennial era was around 1972. The late Centennials were about 19K sf like all the other ones. I recall one in MentOr Ohio which opened in the late 60s and replaced a nearly identical store a mile away. One of the last was in Madison, Ohio and that was nearly identical to older stor...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

While Village and RoNetco operate a decent number of vintage supermarkets, Saker ShopRites, Inc. is extremely aggressive about replacing its older stores. Most of their locations have a very cookie-cutter appearance--and not in a good way--with exteriors I find unattractive and interiors that have u...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

I’ve split the centennial A&P discussion into a separate thread here: https://groceteria.ca/board/viewtopic.php?t=4847 Thank you for doing that and sorry for going off-topic. I made some appropriate edits to the first post of the separate thread which you created. And below is a reproduction of...

Re: Centennial A&P locations

The large Centennial that stands out in memory was in Simsbury CT. It operated as Fitzgerald's, which is still around but seems to be in a different location. There is a brick small Centennial that was altered but operated as an A&P/Super Fresh until they left the DC area. I think it's been dem...

Centennial A&P locations

Centennials generally ran about 19,000 sf. There was a 13K sf version that went into small towns and urban neighborhoods. They looked stubby because having a narrower building screwed up the proportions. It was common for these to have siding rather than brick, but the proportions still seemed off....

Re: 1980s: "The Meat Market at Sears"

Surprisingly, it appears that the odd Sears logo (with "sears" in a "fat," all-lowercase font) appeared in newspaper ads for quite some time. Specifically, that Sears logo was in use from approximately January 1, 1983 to June 30, 1984. During that time, that logo would often appe...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

Out here in the chain's home region (San Francisco Bay Areas), I can think of two Safeway marina buildings that had murals: - San Francisco at the namesake Marina Boulevard site, still there but moved from their orginal spot after a 1995 remodel of the store https://www.alamy.com/mural-on-marina-sa...

Re: Was the A&P capsule logo really used before 1976?

Research I did on Newspapers.com confirms that the A&P capsule logo was indeed used before 1976. Here's an 8/29/75 article which discusses the logo change: https://www.newspapers.com/article/anaheim-bulletin/144517694/ The first appearance of the capsule logo which I could find was in this 9/17/...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

The Springfield Finast looks like a Safeway Marina design like this one from the Pleasant Family Shopping blog (below), which even has some mural work at the entrance. If so, it probably was under construction when Finast bought Safeway's NYC Division. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ei2Ik5quiI0/RvUWnVx...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

Located close to the ShopRite of Millburn is the ShopRite of Springfield. Like the chain's Millburn store, the ShopRite of Springfield (in Union County, NJ) is another longtime Village ShopRite located in a building which began life as a different supermarket. Although I realize that the Springfield...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

The next ShopRite I will discuss is the ShopRite of Millburn (in Essex County, NJ), located at 220 Main Street and owned & operated by Village. Much like Netcong and Chatham, the Millburn supermarket is a classic ShopRite still in operation. But unlike those other two stores, the building which ...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

Although I cannot figure out how to post an image from Newspapers.com that allows one to zoom in, I think I figured out a way to share a link which allows one to view an image or article (and enlarge it) properly. In 1977 and 1978, a number of ShopRite newspaper ads listed all of the chain's locati...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)

I did figure out how to save a Newspapers.com clipping as a JPG file and then upload as many as three of them as attachments to a post. However, because the JPG attachments could not be enlarged, I decided to delete those attachments. And unfortunately, posting a lot of those clippings as JPGs beco...
