Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar

Very sadly, the Centennial A&P in Morristown, NJ will close at the end of 2013. It will be replaced by a Whole Foods in 2014 or 2015. I highly doubt that the building's exterior will look the same once it becomes Whole Foods.

Re: A+P-110 Washington St., Morristown, NJ

This is devastating news, but I have just found out that the Morristown A&P will close by the end of 2013 and be replaced by Whole Foods in 2014 or 2015: http://morristown.patch.com/articles/whole-foods-coming-to-morristown Given how old the Morristown store is, I knew its days were numbered, but th...

Re: A+P-110 Washington St., Morristown, NJ

The AcmeStyle webmaster has now posted an excellent article (with interior and exterior photos) on the Morristown A&P at the following link: http://acmestyleblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/morristown-nj.html#comments . Also, there are a few more things that I want to add as well: First, this store's cupol...

Re: Former Shop Rite Morristown, NJ

As somebody who lives right next to Morristown, I can say with 100% certainty that there used to be a Shop Rite in town. However, it was not on Speedwell Avenue, but rather on Lafayette Avenue in the same building where Staples currently is now. This Shop Rite closed in 1993, and I believe that it o...

Re: A & P's on Cape Cod, Mass.

One of the many cool things about the little Chatham store was that--up until the very end--it sported the "cursive" A&P logo on one of the the sides of the building. (The other side of the building--along with the front of the store--sported the more recent "pill" logo.)

Re: Oldest Operating A&P

The A&P in New Providence, NJ has been expanded considerably since it was a Centennial. In fact, the only way one can even tell that it was ever a Centennial would be to look at an aerial view of the store and see the "original" section of the building (along with the expansion). Unfortunately, I ha...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P

Out of the list of locations posted above, I believe only four of them (unfortunately) still remain "100% pure" centennials: the locations in Morristown, NJ; Pluckemin, NJ; Goldens Bridge, NY; and Katowah, NY. All of the others have been altered in some way. Some of the alterations have been minor: ...

When were the first and last A&P Centennials built?

I recall reading that A&P built its Centennial stores from 1959 to 1969. However, I was curious if anybody knows of any Centennials built outside of this period? I am 100% percent certain that the first Centennial opened prior to 1959. That's because I went to the Ohio Grocery website/message board ...

Re: A & P's on Cape Cod, Mass.

I'm pretty sure that the "little" Chatham location still reflects its A&P heritage. After the chain left Cape Cod, (I believe) the owners of that particular store went into business themselves under the name "Chatham Village Market." As of my last visit to Cape Cod in 2005, this supermarket was stil...

Nanuet Mall (Nanuet, NY)

The Nanuet Mall was Rockland County's largest mall for nearly 30 years. The mall opened in 1969 and was originally anchored by Bamberger's (which became Macy's in 1986) and Sears. In the mid-1990's, a new wing of the mall was built that was anchored by A&S (which subsequently became a Stern's and is...

Former Super Fresh Stores in Hellertown & Berwyn, PA

I was wondering if anyone else ever visited--or knows anything about--two of my favorite supermarkets from my childhood. I'm especially interested in finding out when these two stores opened. Hellertown is located very near Bethlehem. As a young child, I lived in this area, and fondly remember going...

I actually live in Morristown and consider myself to be very blessed that I live so close to one of the few Centennials still operating as an A&P. I truly love this store, and I shop there as much as I can. There was once a very nice lady who worked there, and back in 1999 I asked her if she knew wh...

Dept. store chains with widely dispresed operations

What I found unusual about Orbach's was that although it was a regional chain, it operated in two regions that were far away from each other: New York/New Jersey and Southern California. The only other regional department store I can think of that operated in non-adjacent regions was Gimbels, which ...

I know a lot about this topic since I used to vacation on Cape Cod. One of my favorite A&P locations anywhere has to have been the former Chatham location. (Actually, A&P had two stores in Chatham. The location I am referring to is the location that is currently called Chatham Village Market.) Back ...
