Re: Great American

Great American was a nice mid-level grocery store, not very big by modern standards. Either by design or by chance they featured a lot of local brands from Central New York, which was particularly nice as it can be very hard for small food brands to get into grocery stores these days. The stores var...

Re: Toy Chains

I do remember the Toys for Joy stores in Upstate New York, though I had no idea there were so many at any time. My sister was a clerk at one for a while. When I moved to Rensselaer in 1991, the toy store was closed or closing; the Joy Department Store held on for just a little bit longer. I also rem...

The building still stands, but I don't know if it has any tenants. There are a number of old pictures floating arou...

Re: Wickes Lumber

The only Wicks Lumber I've ever seen or been in was in Ontario when I was a kid. The store was between the railroad tracks that parallel Mission Blvd. and the 163 air national guard base. It was a large outdoor lumber yard with at small office in the center. As a kid it was the only lumber supply i...

Re: Great American Stores Upstate NY

Great American also operated under the name Victory Markets. They had a period of expansion in the late '80s but competition forced them to pull back to their base. They had at least two stores in the Albany area, one on Western Avenue in Albany near the SUNY campus (which has been redeveloped into ...
