Re: 10 Most Unique McDonald's

The interior shot answers the age-old question..."What if they converted an old Marina Safeway into a great big McDonald's?"

Re: 10 Most Unique McDonald's

I'm going to throw one more into the mix.

This store is in Juneau, Alaska. It opened in the mid-1980's. I've actually eaten there, and they had seating on both levels.

Re: Pay Less-Safeway and Pay Less-Albertsons Combos

The old Tanasbourne Mall in Hillsboro was anchored by adjoining Safeway and Pay-Less stores. I believe they went up in the mid 1970's. The current Safeway on the west side of 185th (Tanasbourne Mall was on the east side of 185th) replaced that store around 1990, and the mall property was demolished....

Re: Dairy Queen Through the Years

The historic photos are going in everywhere that I've been. We have a new ground-up Grill & Chill in town with them. My favorite DQ anywhere (Story City, Iowa) has redone the dining room and added the images, while maintaining the classic DQ exterior with the red roof and UNPAINTED BRICK! (Paint...

Re: Older McDonald's Locations

I was at the new McD's the other day on Valley in Rosemead. Something unique that I never knew was that the original a few blocks west was originally an arch building built in the late 50's and was identical to the one in Downey. They have pictures of the store in the 70s as it was getting expanded...

The Arby's in Ankeny, IA has this design (sans pillars these days anyway).

Re: Stuart Anderson's Black Angus

There was a Cattle Company in the classic building design for years on Des Moines' south side. The airport forced them out, claiming they needed the space (for the purpose of space). The owner fought them for awhile over compensation. They then moved into an old Chi Chi's building, but didn't last l...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Animal House was shot entirely at the University of Oregon and locations around the Eugene, Oregon area.

It's been years since I've seen it, and I can't remember if the supermarket scenes had any distinct markers or not.

I'm pretty sure National was at least in the Quad Cities. The East Moline Hardee's has a bunch of local historical photos in the dining room, including a shot of a National.

Re: Unusual 7-11 in Palm Springs, CA

I REALLY REALLY want to say the old 7-Eleven at 3230 SW 87th Ave in Portland (just south of Canyon) had the logo on the right side brick facade. (If you street view it, it's the "Dog Gone Clean" building). I believe this was pretty normal in 7-Eleven's design at one time. This was my child...

Re: Taco Bell Conversions

I would be surprised if they ever remodeled a Mission-style to a mansard...I don't see any practical way to do that conversion...cost-wise or logistically. But I don't think they did a lot of 'tear down and rebuild' in the 80's. I think they were more likely to build a new structure nearby and move....

Allow me to add to the scope here...You will find an article on that new fad known as checkout scanners in the 5/20/80 edition on the B8-C1 pages.

Oh, and these scans are all PDF's you can save. Guess what I'll be doing for the next few hours?

HUGE find, Super S!
