Just to let everybody know that I'm back at Superior now (3 years removed) and can give more 1st hand information without giving away any trade secrets of course lol! An update for the Gigante that Superior took over in Chino on Central and Philadelphia. Superior on Walnut and Central will not move ...

Re: Unusual shaped Vons sign, 9119 Reseda Blvd, Northridge

I believe this was possibly a Food Giant and then a Smith's Food King (when they were around the first time).

Re: Intriguing SoCal chain: Superior Super Warehouse

Yes Superior did an excellent job remodeling the store. This is also Superiors test store for self-service checkout and so far the numbers show 32-35% of the customers are using the self service. Superior spends $3 million on a store remodel when they take over a store and $5 million on new grounder...

32 ranch market?

This store was a 32nd Street Market and the chain has since closed all of their stores which I believe got as high as 5 stores. The USC store as it was called had a huge liquor warehouse upstairs above the store and in the heyday the store was said to have had 25% of their sales come from alcoholic ...

The Pop Shoppe

Anybody remember the Pop Shoppe? You would buy various flavors of loose sodas and take them home in a crate and bring back the empty bottles. The one I remember in Anaheim CA was a drive through. Loved the grape and ginger ale flavors.

Superior in Covina

The Superior in Covina is under a sub lease from UWG (Unified Western Grocers) who is leasing it from Supervalu, who bought out Albertsons, who bought out Lucky. The store was a Super Saver which was Lucky's attempt at a warehouse store prior to Superior going back the 2nd time to that site. They di...

1st store still open

Superior Super Warehouse in southern CA has their first store still open but there is a twist to the story. The original store #1 is in Covina on Arrow & Citrus. It was opened in March 1981, Superior lost the lease and had union problems and closed the store in Dec. 1983. In 1994 they opened the...

Numbers on shopping carts

I seem to remember Gemco doing this and you would drive around the side of the building to load your stuff into your car. Possibly I remember Fedco doing this as well.

yes if there was a Taco Bell on Ball & Knott I'm pretty sure that was the Pup n taco I went to as a kid living in Anaheim. Most of the Pup n Taco's were taken over by Taco Bell.

Sears Candy Counters

I grew up in Anaheim and mom and dad would take me to then called BPC (Buena Park Center now called BPM (Buena Park Mall)) and Sears had a free standing booth right outside (BPC was an open air mall then) ooh the smell of the hot caramel corn! Yes I remember hot toffee peanuts too. I also would go e...

Treasury Dept Stores

David, I saw you posted a picture of a Treasury store and this is my memory of their sign so I think that is the same chain. The one near me when I lived in Anaheim was in Buena Park I think. I forwarded the picture to my mom who used to take me there alot so she may know better than me.

Pup n Taco

The Pup n Taco I went to when I was in High School was at Mountain & Philadelphia in Ontario. It was converted to a Taco Bell. It burnt down a few years ago and they rebuilt it. I also remember going as a kid to one in Anaheim somewhere on Ball Rd maybe Brookhurst or Knott near a Pop Shoppe (rem...

Yes I would say that was a Market Basket as it looks the same as the one that was in Chino on Central and Philadelphia now slated to become a Superior Super Warehouse.
