Re: Kmart Plazas

I would imagine that there were several Kmart Plazas/Shopping Centers/whatevers in Michigan. I'd think so too, especially around Detroit. I believe there was a later version in Winston-Salem NC, where I live now. It's more the mid-1970s prototype, but there's a whole strip center with multiple tena...

I recently found myself in Galax VA and saw this centennial A&P store which is now home to the local newspaper:

Interesting.

BTW, I didn't post interiors because I couldn't really get any good ones, but I have a suspicion that they weren't shot in the Sonora Save-Mart. They just didn't "match" the shape of the building nor my recollections of it from a 1999 visit.

Anyone know of K-Mart Plaza centers in Texas or farther west? The 1964 shopping center guide I've referenced before (best dollar I ever spent at a thrift store) lists Kmart Plazas in the following cities: -- East Gadsden AL -- Westminster CA -- Bloomington IL -- Danville IL -- St. Joseph MO -- Char...

The restaurant actually was a feature of some of the "greenhouse" prototype stores of the late 1970s and early 1980s. You can still see them in some of these stores, although the former restaurant is now pretty much just some tables adjacent to the deli counter.

A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar

For those of you who aren't aware, this is an example of the A&P "Centennial" prototype: http://www.groceteria.com/ap/gallery/images/77.jpg I'm curious as to how many "Centennials" are still operating as supermarkets. I think the number will be surprisingly high. I'd especial...

Former Big Star/Colonial Locations Still Selling Groceries

Just curious as to how many former Big Star and Colonial locations still house grocers. A few I'm aware of that do: -- Charlotte NC (Park Road Shopping Center): Now Harris-Teeter. -- Charlotte NC (North Graham Street): Now Wayne's Supermarket. -- Charlotte NC (Eastway Plaza): Now Save-a-Lot. -- Wins...

Ditto San Francisco, albeit a small one. It's a fairly common name nationwide, actually, up there with Food Town and Food City.

Atlanta

For those who are interested, I added a post focusing on Atlanta chains in 1978 on the site today. I'd love to expand on it here (in anticipation of a future Atlanta section on the site) if anyone's interested in a discussion:

I believe that this was actually a Mayfair market, at least as of the late 1960s (does that explain a lot?). You're absolutely right. The center itself opened in 1955, and was even known in 1964 as the "Mayfair Center". I can't confirm the subsequent tenants, but your assessment makes a l...

Once again, let's please keep this focused on the HISTORY of the chain, not its current operations. I'll have to close the thread otherwise.

Thanks,

Re: New Uses for Grocery Stores

Isn't it more interesting to talk about unusual, non-retail conversions, per the original post? Sorry to be a pain, but this has gotten pretty far off the subject, in my opinion. Can we at least agree that a supermarket becoming a different supermaket is fairly commonplace? Agreed 100%. That said, ...

As I mention several posts up, it was definitely no later than the mid-to-late 1970s.

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor

Who remembers the now defunct mostly New England state based K-mart clones Bradlee's and Caldor? I think "clones" is the wrong word here. That's sort of like saying Safeway was an A&P clone just because they were both in the supermarket business. Bradlee's and Caldor were discount dep...
