Re: Sportsland and Sportswest

I just recall seeing ads for Sportsland that said that the ad items were also good at Sportswest at Totem Lake. As new stores were built, they were built as Sportswest and both banners were prominent in the ads. Eventually I remember the Sportsland banner becoming Sportswest.

Sportsland and Sportswest

In the 1970's and into the 1980's I remember a chain of sporting goods store in the Pacific Northwest called Sportsland and Sportswest. They all eventually went under the Sportswest name. But they were the sporting goods division of the Pay 'n Save Corporation. From what I know, Sportsland came firs...

Re: Big Lots

The Big Lots store in Burien, WA used to be a Pic n Save. However the building that it is in used to be a House of Values store that was closed when PayLess Drugs bought the Gov Mart Bazar just a block away. But originally the Burien House of Values was divded into two stores. One was a fabric store...

Re: Kentucky Roast Beef?

I also remember that in the late 1970's, there was another fast food chain owned by KFC. It was called, Zantigo's. It was KFC's answer to Taco Bell and Taco Time. Obviously, this was before Pepsi bought KFC and Taco Bell. I only remember seeing maybe two Zantigo's. One was a free standing unit in a ...

Re: PayLess Drug Stores

In the 1970's, PayLess Drug bought some locations of Gov Mart Bazaar stores in the Seattle area. These locations were about the size of a Fred Meyer in that era. PayLess did not operate the food side of the buildings. Bazaar kept those. They also sublet the clothing section out to another operator b...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center

Oddly enough, I just found out today that a new Trader Joe's store is moving into a shopping center here in Redmond which already has a QFC (which itself is already three blocks away from another QFC store.) Since those two aren't really directly competing with each other (Trader Joe's has much sma...

Re: Lucky Stores in Washington

From previous posts here on Groceteria, I know that Lucky acquired Big Bear stores here in the Seattle area. I believe these Big Bear Stores were not related to others across the county. But Lucky operated in the Seattle area until about 1985 or 86. The operations were then sold to Associated Grocer...

Re: Fred Meyer Marketplace, Shelton, WA

Oh, in my last message, I forgot to mention that the Silverdale Fred Meyer Marketplace, which was built as a Food Pavilion around 1992, was remodeled into a Best Buy in 2001. Fred Meyer wasn't there very long -- they were there from about 1996 to 2001. The Silverdale store had a broader selection o...

I had meant to say that these QFCs are former Stock Markets.

Re: Fred Meyer Marketplace, Shelton, WA

In addition to the James Center Fred Meyer Marketplace in Tacoma, the Gig Harbor Fred Meyer Marketplace was also a Stock Market Foods. That store was built by the Hogan family as a Food King around 1966 and elements of the original exterior are similar to that of the University Place Albertsons, al...

Re: Fred Meyer Marketplace, Shelton, WA

Yes, the Belfair QFC started its' life as a Stock Market Foods. Woodinville, Lakewood and Parkland are also former QFCs. There are some other QFC that were Stock Market that have since been closed. These include Pearl Street in Tacoma, Burien, Yelm, Rainier Beach. There was also a store in Sumner th...

QFC and Olson's

Most of the Olson's store in King and Snohomish Counties were bought by QFC in the 90's. Olson's logo used a oval that was similar in shape to Kroger. So the following photo almost looks like this QFC was a former Kroger. This, of course, isn't true, since the Kroger has never operated under the Kro...

Re: Supermarket jingles

Here is some useless mind lint. I believe that this is an accurate jingle for the now defunct Tradewell Stores in the Northwest. "We're proud to be your neighbor. We love to see you smile. So treat yourself to quality, down each and every aisle. We really love your business and our name has mor...

Re: Fred Meyer's history in Centralia/Chehalis

I don't have any documentation on this, but I have been told that Fred Meyer had been a tennant in the original Yard Birds, which is now the current Sun Birds. Also, Fred Meyer used to operate the drug/pharmacy in the current Yard Birds building. I believe all that ended when Pay 'n Save bought Yard...
