Other areas

I think it's safe to say that ASC had the Jewel T stores outside of Southern California. I lived in Texas at that time, and they were all over that area. Jewel T was essentially a Save-A-Lot without a meat department. The store I saw the most is still in business as a S-A-L today, although it has be...

Here's one....

In Lafayette, LA, there is a former Price-Lo that is currently 4 nightclubs in one called Graham Central Station. They subdivided the store so that if you enter through the main entrance, you can choose from all 4.

Hypermart, again

The last time I passed the Hypermart in Garland, it was still called Wal-Mart's Hypermart USA. I don't know if that has changed or not. Most of the larger supercenters are expansions of the early 90s Division 1 prototype 120-140,000 sq.ft. stores. They didn't build many original supercenters past 22...

Hypermart USA

I wouldn't consider that Hypermart USA was a failure. All 4 of the original stores are still open. The mistake with it was that at 250,000 sq. ft., it was just too big to manage. In addition, since Wal-Mart wasn't managing the food side of the operation, they had relatively little control on what ha...

Ahhh for the good old days.....

I remember the Kmart front end delis......the popcorn was consistent...in a not so good way. You could get drinks, sub sandwiches and the like there. And don't forget the Icees. The cafeterias/grills were in two distinct styles. Most of the stores built in the 60's protruded out into the store near ...

Others......

Gibson's Discount Centers operated many stores that were full line. While not supercenter in size (some less than 70,000 sq.ft.), they did carry both food and general merchandise, as well as fresh meats and produce, plus pharmacies. Most, but not all of these stores were sold or closed in the early ...

Here's who owns what.......

JCPenney had been in the drug store business since the 1960's. Thrift Drug had remained it's only name during all those years. JCPenney bought the entire Eckerd chain in 1996. At that time, the chain stretched from Texas to Florida, and up the eastern seaboard. During this time JCP bought and paired...

Using other suppliers.....

As I have understood it, Target and Kmart both do this. Part of the undoing of Kmart prior to their Chapter 11 filing in 2002 was the contract they forged with Fleming, because before that point it was on a per store basis. In addition, A&P recently farmed out their distribution to C&S, and ...

Skaggs Alpha Beta in Texas

From the mid 70's to the early 90's Skaggs Alpha Beta was alive and well in Texas and Arkansas as well, with stores stretching from West Texas to Little Rock. The Little Rock stores were let go before 1990. The Texas stores were briefly rebranded to Jewel in 1991 before being sold to Albertsons in 1...

I think you might be right.....

There were two stores like this in Baton Rouge. Both of them were on the eastern side of town; one on Florida Blvd. next to the old Kmart. The other one was on O'Neal Rd in a shopping center. Both of them are the spitting image, except the stucco. The O'Neal store has been remodeled; the Florida one...

I got a better one......

In New Iberia, LA, there is a combination store called Fremin's Food & Furniture. One side of the store is an independant grocer, the other side is a mid-range furniture store. And yes, they are connected. And they have commercials......on regional TV. I went there once, and was truly amazed.

Another one.....

In Steel Magnolias (1989): Brookshire's #29, Natchitoches, LA. Although the store since received a different, brighter decor package, it still has the same floorplan as in the movie. The decor package at that time was very typical of their stores.
