Re: Two old Foodlands in the Pittsburgh area close

Looks like the store at 5821 Library Road, Bethel Park, not too far from Castle Shannon, is still open. (Not quite as visible via Street View as the closed two, since it doesn't face the street.)

Re: Unimart in Los Angeles?

Folks: A little to add about Unimart ... There was a location in North Hollywood at the NW corner of Victory & Vineland. Seems odd, because that's only a couple miles from the Hollywood Way and Vanowen location (the current Fry's). ( Second photo, showing the building .) In this comment page , ...

Re: A big discovery: 1976 Safeway California map!

Bumping this thread because of an article about parking meters that ran in the L.A. Times on Sunday -- with accompanying photo showing a Safeway on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood in 1949.

Re: Tampa Bay Area Photos

I've posted a Tampa Bay area history timeline for your amusement: http://www.groceteria.com/place/southeast/tampa-bay-area/tampa-bay-area-history-timeline/ It can obviously be improved (and will). It's currently a little Pinellas County-centric, because I had the St. Pete newspaper archives as a ma...

Re: Glen Bell, Founder of Taco Bell, Dies

Obituary from the L.A. Times. I'd love to see the late-'60s ads referred to: "defining and picturing the menu items, listing ingredients and explaining how to pronounce them."

Judging by the stacked sign out front, I'm thinking this could have been a Wal-Mart at one time. I'm not 100% confident about that. Not a Wal-Mart -- they weren't in Tam...

Was in my hometown of Tampa over the holidays, and I can tell you that many people there definitely remember, and miss, Eckerd.

Re: Former IHOP locations

On the '67 list, both Burbank, CA and Tampa, FL (S. Dale Mabry) are still IHOPs. Burbank has a renovated interior -- including, sadly, a drop ceiling. Not sure of the interior status of that Tampa location.

Well...the Montgomery Ward name is alive and well. The current wards.com operation has no relation to Montgomery Ward & Co.

Supermarket empire has local roots http://www.sbsun.com/search/ci_13196859?IADID=Search-www.sbsun.com-www.sbsun.com Seems a little odd that the crucial second-to-last paragraph doesn't begin with something like "After suffering a serious arm injury..." to explain why a champion bricklayer...

Ah, thanks -- I probably should have figured out the Gold Circle/Gold Triangle connection on my own.

Seems like they could have kept expanding the concept: Gold Square, Gold Pentagon, Gold Hexagon...

Re: Food Fair and "Supermarket Sweep"

Bumping up this old thread to provide more information. I've seen a couple of episodes of the original 1960s "Supermarket Sweep" at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, which has several of them in its collection. One is even available for online viewing , although their onli...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P

The A&P in New Providence, NJ has been expanded considerably since it was a Centennial. In fact, the only way one can even tell that it was ever a Centennial would be to look at an aerial view of the store and see the "original" section of the building (along with the expansion). My g...

Gold Triangle (Florida)

Does anyone have any details about Gold Triangle stores in Florida? I only vaguely remember their existence. The location I'm familiar with was in Tampa, on Dale Mabry Highway just south of Columbus Drive; there was a traffic light at its entrance, and a city-installed "Gold Triangle" stre...
