Re: Manitowoc & Two Rivers, WI chain grocery locations, 1942-present

I tried to look it up in the county property tax map but (unless I'm missing something) the online parcel records for Manitowoc don't list construction dates. IIRC from the times when I lived there, the Manitowoc assessor records construction dates for residential buildings only. Every city does th...

Re: Manitowoc & Two Rivers, WI chain grocery locations, 1942-present

When you fleshed out the pre-1945 listings, it looks like you were confused by 1120 Washington Street...which apparently went from A&P to National and back to A&P again through the course of the 1930s. I was confused myself, so I checked the local newspaper archives (which I still have acces...

Re: New location lists: Eau Claire and La Crosse WI

And the map continues to fill in! Wisconsin (and other upper midwest states) were historically strong hotbeds of independent grocers, so the chain lists for La Crosse and Eau Claire are probably shorter than average for cities of their size. In La Crosse, the 1950s Kroger at 2600 Slate Road survives...

Re: New location list: Grand Junction CO, 1925-1994

I've passed through Grand Junction once, in 2010. I remember it as an oasis after hours of driving through uninhabited red-rock wilderness in Utah, and before hours of treacherous driving across the continental divide. Alas, I didn't go looking for supermarket artifacts while I was there... Grand Ju...

Re: A conjoined, double A&P centennial store? (6644 N Ridge Rd, Madison, OH)

Very easy one. The A&P was the one of the last centennials in the Cleveland area. The other building was a branch of the Ashtubula-based Carisle-Allen department store chain--it looked a bit different from the current store but did complement the Centennial. [...] Thanks for solving the mystery...

Re: New Location List: Pueblo CO, 1925-1991

It looks like you have Prairie Avenue misspelled as "Prarie" on the spreadsheet. Great work, though! I doubt it's still that way today, but Pueblo definitely looks to be a place where Safeway historically "called the shots." The bizarre pylon/marina/Super-S amalgamation at W. Nor...

Original Kroger superstore, Jackson, MI closed

I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but the Kroger superstore in Jackson, Michigan closed this year. This was quite possibly the last 1970s Kroger store with a perfect, completely-original exterior left in operation anywhere in the country: http://www.mlive.com/news/jackson/index.ssf/2018/02/kro...

Re: Manitowoc & Two Rivers, WI chain grocery locations, 1942-present

Nicely done! I kick myself for not researching Madison, Wisconsin as well...but my heart wasn't in the city during most of the time I lived in it, plus their central library spent several years closed for renovation. I was able to add a couple of years to the original because I'm a librarian with sp...

You could be on to something there. The shopping centre is called "Eagle Creek Plaza."

Re: New location lists: River Cities WV/KY/OH

Lots to take in here. West Virginia itself is a goldmine for old retail artifacts due to the area's long-term economic decline (macabre as it sounds to celebrate that), and it's great to have both of the state's largest cities documented. 2957 5th Ave. in Huntington is a 1950s Kroger with a street-f...

Does anyone have any idea about the provenance of this store? I'm guessing Jewel-Osco, but that's only because I was driving through Chicagoland when I saw it. The pictures are from 2013.

Whatever became of Western Steer Steakhouse?

steer.jpg Does anyone remember the Western Steer steakhouse chain? It was low-priced, and it had considerable penetration through the reaches of Appalachia. My family used to frequent Western Steer in the '80s and '90s, and I always found the restaurant to be a disconcerting experience. You stood i...

New web pages: The Artifacts of Supermarkets Past

I've taken a lot of supermarket pictures over the years, and this month I decided to create some static, low-tech, made-from-scratch gallery pages to lend some sense of order and chronology to them. They may be of interest: The Artifacts of A&P The Artifacts of Safeway More chains will be forthc...
