Ralphs/Loray Market/Northern California in the 1970s

Over on Flickr, Charles posted some pictures of a former Loray Market, a chain which was purchased by Ralphs in 1973 as their first attempt to enter the Norcal market. Does anyone have more information about Loray and Ralphs in Norcal? (I don't mean their second foray in the 1990s.) I found this sma...

The Market Basket would be the building in the middle?
That's the same image I was looking at and I believe you are correct.

Re: La Mirada Market Basket location questions

Based on the information I've found, I believe the post office has always been a post office, while the Market Basket was demolished and replaced by homes. According to this list of Market Basket locations http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=698&p=4230 there was a Market Bas...

Actually, the first prototype Kmart was in a former Kresge at the corner of Laurel Canyon and Rinaldi in San Fernando, CA. It's now a Didi's Discounts.

Re: Highland Park Marina Safeway/Big Lots closing

A group is trying to get this store designated as a historical cultural landmark. El Super wants to either rebuild or heavily remodel the store. There is some community opposition to this (how much there really is I can't tell) so they are seeking this protection. Here are some posts from the York B...

Re: Goodbye Virgin Megastores

Speaking of the history, the first store was the one at Sunset and Crescent Heights, which opened in late 1992. The Burbank store at the Media Center Mall closed when the roof collapsed during a rain storm and it never reopened. It was about the time the Hollywood store was about to so they transfer...

Northridge - Trader Joes, Health Club and Borders (subdivided all 4 levels) Do you mean the store at the north end of the Northridge Fashion Plaza? It was partially dismantled to create an open-air plaza with a Harry & David, Sharper Image, and other smaller stores while the northern half of th...

I saw 1-liter bottles of Cragmont ginger ale and tonic water at the 99 Cent Only Store over the weekend. Of course the label said it was from Lucerne Foods.

Re: Does anybody remember Mayfair Mkts. Discount Grocery Store?

Adding on to this long-dormant thread, here's a picture of the West Hollywood store at Santa Monica and Sweetzer from 1960. This store has been completely remodeled inside and out (not necessarily for the better) and is now a Gelson's. http://jpg3.lapl.org/pics51/00075431.jpg This was a Mayfair loca...

Unless Zody's lopped off a floor, which I doubt, the Alhambra store was one level.

Re: Britt's Department Store

That store is now the Kmart on the south side of 3rd Street just east of Fairfax. Britt's was a unit of Newberry's. The only other store I know of was on the corner of Valley and Almansor in Alhambra, which became a Zody's but I remember seeing the Britt's labelscar as a kid. After Zody's closed it ...

Southland Corporation bought Citgo from Occidental Petroleum in 1983. In 1986 they sold a 50% interest to Venezuela's state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, which then bought the rest of the company in 1989. In 1976 Southland bought 183 West Coast gas stations from Tosco who, in turn, boug...

Originally it was an independent pharmacy called Jundt's. It was Jundt's until at least 1992. Thrifty got a liquor license at that address in 1997.

Re: Unusual supermarkets in La Canada Flintridge and Glendale

- Vons #143 on Foothill Blvd in LCF between the Glendale Freeway (State Route 2) and the Foothill Freeway (I-210). Is this the store at 635 W Foothill Blvd? If so, it's a former Alexander's Market, I believe the last Alexander's in the chain and Vons took it over in 1977. It was built between 1967 ...
