The buildings definately look much the same except that one had much more space to work with while the other did not. The layout isn't too odd. The one on Lawrence always struck me as being a little odd in layout. Mostly because I remember the floral department was somewhere in the back atypical fro...

Re: Abandoned store, 8400 Euclid, Cleveland OH
I am orginally from Cleveland, Ohio. I remember Pick N Pay while growing up and I don't ever remember any locations looking like that. The building looks very 1950s and it is possible it was a Pick N Pay or maybe something else altogether. Cook United bought Pick N Pay in the early 50s and around th...

Those are awesome photos! Reminds me of another Jewel store that last I checked was still a Jewel. I think it is located on Central and Lawerence. If I am not mistaken the building of this one looks exactly that one. Does this old Jewel have kind of an odd layout inside? Also, I have to agree. Going...

According to a 1965 Chicago Tribune article Dominick's did buy seven Eagle supermarket locations from Consolidated Foods in Skokie, Des Plaines, Elmhurst, Forest park, Rolling Meadows, Glenview and at 6009 N Broadway, Chicago. The aricle also mentioned that it bought three Korvette foods stores earl...

Funny I thought I had read that the two (Kohl's Department Store and Kohl's Foods) were related or maybe I was just assuming they were connected and one and the same. I was reading an article some time ago about I believe the daughter of the Kohl's family patriarch and I think that is where I read a...

Chicago Photos
Looking at phtos linked here: http://www.groceteria.com/journal/2006/11.html Just some comments you may not know. The former Jewel on Oakton ceased being a Jewel in the late 60s or early 70s. Newspaper says that in the 70s it was Segal's shoes. Since at least the early 90s I know that it has been a ...

Delray Farms is targeting the hispanic market in Illinois There are a couple of other chains that also do that. One is Cermak Produce and another is Belmont Produce. Cermak has a lot of old castaway locations like one on Kedzie and Berteau that is a former Jewel. <<Edited by moderator to correct qu...

Interesting. I had no idea Kohl's ever ventured south of Milwaukee. Heh, heh. I had no idea Kohl's had food stores until about two years ago. Privelage of working in a library. How I found out was by chance. Around 2000 or so my parents used to frequent the Lincolnwood Produce place and I was curio...

Hello, all. I am first time poster although I have been visiting this site every so often for the last two years. I am from Chicago and have seen many different chains of supermarkets in old newspaper archives some of which have mysteries surrounding them or seemingly very hard history to find. I wa...

I used to live just down the street from this place for years and never suspected till now that it may have been a grocery store. I am a new member but longtime visitor of this website and I am always happy to fill in the blanks because I have access to Chicago Tribune archives but I cannot find any...

Was Kohl's
Nope, it was definately a Kohl's according to Chicago Tribune archives. Kohl's did have locations in Chicago. According to a 1975 advertisement. The locations were: Central and Addison Elston and Kimball (which prior to that was a supermarket called Mayflower and it is now split between a Family Dol...
