Re: Sears/Safeway rumor from 2006

Safeway has enough issues as it is under Albertsons ownership. I would hate to see what would have happened if Lampert took over. Especially when you consider how many Kmart and Sears stores have closed, and in some cases completely leaving states. It sure seems odd though that so many of these merg...

Re: What are some of the reasons why supermarket history is so interesting?

I think what makes it so interesting is the fact that this type of retail exists in some form in every town. When you factor in independents, there are a ton of different takes on store design and presentation. Certain chains had their unique designs that are still recognizable long after the chain ...

Re: Safeway Marina interior oddity?

Thanks for that link. Very good set of pictures. They confirmed my original suspicion about the ceilings as they clearly show 2' by 4' panels which are easy to spot next to the 8' fluorescent fixtures. And a couple that reflect the shine of the metal grid. While I have seen Marina stores with suspen...

I appreciate what you do, and I think more will take interest as some chains disappear into history.

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

Also, I am trying to remember if the Jupiter stores used the same models of registers as Kmart. Jupiter was gone by the time Kmart installed scanners, but I do remember Kmart price tags being used in Jupiter in the early 1980s.

Re: Sandusky (OH) Mall History

Fast forward to 2018....over the last few years Sandusky Mall has lost Sears, then Macy's, and this year Elder-Beerman. JCPenney is still open for now. This mall seemed to be doing ok until just recently, as it is along the way to the Cedar Point amusement park and is exposed to a lot of traffic.

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

My first experience with K-Mart was in late 1973 when the Dickson City, Pa. store opened and they had the electronic (digital) registers from the get-go throughout the store and at the front end as well. As I recall, they were rather large and kind of square(ish) or boxy. The readout was kind of a ...

Kmart checkouts over the years

Kmart's early stores used mechanical cash registers, but I am curious about the timeline when Kmart first used electronic cash registers, and the year that they last used a mechanical register. (I was born in 1973) The only mechanical one in a Kmart I can remember was in a standalone auto center bui...

Re: Safeway Grand Opening-Photo-Unknown Date & Location

The license plates on the cars are yellow. Arizona had yellow license plates at that time. The houses have swamp coolers on the roofs, which are indicative of a desert-like climate (they only work in low humidity). The billboard in the parking lot says Eller on it. According to Wikipedia someone na...

Jack In The Box "Cube" signs

The Jack In The Box in Longview, WA, which I believe was built in the 1970s, has a cube road sign still in use, which has been updated to the new logo. I was curious as to how late these were used, as I have seen these in only a handful of locations.

Re: Safeway Grand Opening-Photo-Unknown Date & Location

The Chevy truck with the camper on it is either a 1969 or 1970 model. (there is a very minor difference between 1969 & 1970 which can not be seen in the picture) The LTD next to that truck I believe is a 1971 model.

Re: Marina Safeway in Montana - anyone know which town?

Looks like their (I'd say) 70's style (with the large red K and smaller blue-green mart). This was the Kmart logo from their debut in the 1960s until the early 1990s. I think there may still be a few other stores that still have it. One in Sacramento was still sporting it until about ten years ago....

Re: What is the oldest Safeway in operation?

Question posed: what is the oldest Safeway in operation? To meet this criteria, I'm looking for stores with minimal remodels, but the oldest one, total, without extensive closures and especially not being demolished and rebuilt. I know that there's many from the 1960s still in S.F., and the oldest ...

Vancouver, WA Tower Mall Safeway

http://www.columbian.com/news/2018/jun/17/shopping-new-face-tower-mall-vancouver/ I know the article is more focused on the Tower Mall property itself, but I posted here because it contains a couple of good photos of the Safeway store in the mall when it was open and has an interior shot as well (wi...

Re: When Did K-Mart First Come to Portland, OR?

What about the Kmart at 122nd & Sandy (#4288)? Not sure what year it opened, but it is an older store... This store opened on 3/25/71. This is a very tough question: when did K-Mart first come to Portland, OR? The locations: *13750 S.E. Johnson Rd., Milwaukie, OR (opened c. 1968-70) *2315 S.E. ...
